MoxidectinI just purchased some of this wormer. Oddly enough, I had never heard of it before seeing it on this site, then found it in the pigeons catalogs. We were always told ivomec was the best, but why catch 100 birds to worm them when, according the the package, this stuff works just as well, if not better? Anyway, my question is, is this a once a month wormer? twice a year? just when needed? We always gave ivomec twice a year.

Hi Lovebirds,
I use moxidectin from the Australian Pigeon Co. For eradication of roundworms, Dr. Colin Walker, suggests that it be used twice at a 3-week interval. It can be repeated every 3 weeks over a 6-month period as the longest the eggs can remain infective is 5-6 months. This treatment should be done with a thorough disinfection of the loft. During racing he suggests (in the absence of a vet testing for worms) that Moxidectin be given every fourth week - usually on a Monday. If your pigeons are allowed open loft and field on the ground, you may want to treat for tapeworms with praziquantel. The best thing to do however is have your vet do a fecal test for worms, just to be sure. Although prazi and moxi are very mild drugs. If you don't know Dr. Walker's book, The Flying Vet's Pigeon Health Management, it's the best. I highly recommend it. Hope that helps. birdy |
