My feral pigeon diedHello,
Most of you might not remember, but I had posted about a feral pigeon I had rescued about a 1 1/2 months back on these forums. It lived on my balcony but, its sibling was killed by a crow, so I had decided to rescue it. It had learnt to drink by itself but it still could not eat, so I had to feed it seeds by hand. One day after overfeeding it, it could not stand up properly - one of its legs might have got dislocated, and as the days passed by, it sometimes got worse and sometimes better. It never learnt to fly or eat by itself due to its leg (the leg had become very thin). I used to feed it once or twice a day, (I am very busy these days), and someone else use to give it the occasional drink of water. But today, when I was feeding the pigeon, I sort of accidentaly choked it and it died right on my hands...I was heartbroken, and I think I am partially to blame for its death...I just dont know...it was the first pigeon which thought that I was his mommy...I have wrapped it up with a pillow sheet, and will bury it soon...just wanted to share this with kind hearted people like you guys... |

I am not so sure you had anything to do with this tragedy. The leg was in a state of atrophy and we don't know why. There was something wrong to begin with. You may think that food went down the wrong pipe but the bird may have had a heart attack while you were feeding it making what happened a coincidence. They don't choke so easily because they close the opening to the trachea when drinking or eating.
Try not to be so hard on yourself. You have enough in grieving for the loss of the bird.

I don't think I have had an animal or bird die on me without convincing myself that it was a result of my doing or not doing something, so I know how you feel! But Fred is right, it was probably not connected to anything that you did...and you did your best for your little friend.
I am so sorry that he died! Cynthia
