New to this

Have a few questions. I am rather new to this pigeon thing. Lets see I have 20 ladies and gentlemen pigeons. They are real cool. I have been flying them for a week now and had them for a month. I actually lost one, but I think that is great considering they are 3 months old and just started to fly out of the loft (they have flown 5 times now). I was a wreck the first day i opened the door with no outer avery on. I just sat there and thought oh i am getting ready to watch 21 birds tell me good-bye forever, but they all came home other than that one. I was not sure what to expect on a return rate since they were so old and strong winged. But I have only lost the one on the first day. I guess these are my questions if anyone has advice. I would like to have some things on hand, say for canker and different things, but I dont really know what to have for sure. Then I was looking at just canker and there are so many different things I could get. Any suggestions as to what kinds of things I should have on hand? Oh next question is the ladies and gentlemen are vaccinated for PMV and paratyphoid. Should I do POX? Thanks for any help you might offer.

Hi -

Three of the basics which many people keep are aainst Canker (Trich) as you have mentioned, Coccidiosis and worms.

What you can get for 'just in case' treatment or for cases which arise will depend on where you are - here in the UK, for instance, some items will be prescription only, but may be available from a pigeon supply house in the USA.

For Canker, many people use Spartrix (in tablet form) or Flagyl (Metronidazole). In the UK, Spartrix is readily available, but Metronidazole is prescription only.

For coccidiosis, we use Appertex (available in the UK) in tablet form. There is also a preparation for flock treatment in water (I think, somewhat less effective than individual oral administering) called Coxoid.

Then, for worming, there is a tablet form called Panacur (fenbendazole).

Anti-pox vaccination is good. maybe when the time comes round again, you can look out for a 3-in-1 vaccine.

There are, of course, various other drugs for use in specific circumstances (like Baytril, the antibiotic - available from Foys in the US) but most are not what i would see as basic, kept available treatments, except by rescuers & rehabbers, being prescription drugs and posibly limited in shelf life. An indication of some of these can be seen on a 'drugs chart' provided by Nooti - just put drugs in the advanced search topic and Nooti as the poster's name.

I'm sure someone will be along with more info later - I'm just off out

John

It's easy!

1) First off, if the file you want to post is a JPEG, I think it has to be 100k or less. You'll have to edit it / resize it down to 100k and save a small version of it on your computer using some sort of photo editor you may have on your PC.

2) Post a Reply to any thread or Start a New Thread... input what ever it is you want to say in the text field like normal.

3) BEFORE you Submit... scroll down to the Additional Options area.

4) Click on Manage Attachments... a new dialog widow will come up...

5) Click on Browse... another new dialog window will come up, in this one, navigate to the file (picture) you have on your PC... Select that file... and Click on OPEN at the bottom of the dialog window you're in.

6) Back in the dialog window where the Browse optoin was... note that the path and filename for your picture is now on the line next to the Browse option... Now click on the Upload option next to Browse.

7) Wait...

8) If the upload awas successful... you'll see the file name of your picture in the Current Attachments area... if not... their will be an error message at the top which will help you troubleshoot what's wrong.

9) Now you can click on the Close This Window option at the bottom of the dialog window that had the Browse and Upload options in it... OR... you can Browse and Upload again to attach more pictures.

10) After clicking close this window, you'll be back in the Reply or New Thread windows... now click on Submit!
