Petition against use of poisons in pigeon control

On behalf of a number of pigeon folk and all pigeons, I have compiled a petition against the use of poisons such as Avitrol in the control of feral pigeons.

Thanks to BigBird for permission to post this.

This comes out of a cruel and needless eradication program initiated at an apartment complex in Miami, FL this week.

Several pigeons had previously been rescued and relocated to various parts of the U.S. by a dedicated group of people; a few more have now been given a free trip to safety. Our member in Miami attempted to save two actual victims, one of which died, the other may pull through.

The petition is at

Everybody,
This is a vital petition. I know the person who witnessed this needless slaughter. She managed to grab 14 birds before the poisoning began and sent them to California to get them out of harm's way. There is one survivor still holding on that is being treated by a vet. The prognosis is unknown but this hen's kidneys stopped functioning and the vet managed to get them started again. The bird's mate died.
Please sign this petition. This nightmare is happening all over the country.

Thank you so much for posting the petition--I signed it. It makes me sick that it's legal to poison pigeons. We almost lost a young roller to organophosphate poisoning last summer when he got lost and ingested pesticides in someone's yard. I'll never forget seeing him having seizures, and being unable to stand for days because the toxin caused his feet to clench in claws. Thanks to our awesome vet, he made a full recovery, but it was a terrible ordeal.

There are much better ways to discourage pigeons from taking up residence. I've heard poisoning is ineffective in the long run anyway, because the pigeons that die are replaced by others. Excluding them from perching and nesting on the building works better.

Aside from the tragic deaths of the pigeons, there is risk to other wild birds, including raptors that might feed on poisoned pigeons.

Exactly. It's an insult to injury.

I'm quite sure some of the pigeons that come to us for help have picked up bits of poison that other pigeons have dropped along the way.

Clearly, this method of pigeon 'control' only paves the way to a path of destruction.

More signatures needed

I hope no one minds me bumping this up. Please send it on to anyone or any groups that might be sympathetic to the appalling suffering that pigeons are subjected to for being there and pooping!

Well, all I can say is that it is the pigeon that is God's creation, not the bricks and mortar that go to building a chuch. So as usual man is destroying God's creation to protect his own designs. Too sad.

Appalling, isn't it? We've been such awful stewards of the earth. Not at all what God intended when He gave us dominion. The church officials' behavior is especially shameful in light of the fact that doves and pigeons are mentioned more times in the Bible than any animal, and the dove is the symbol for the Holy Spirit.

Thank you Mary. And Birdmom4ever, you speak my own thoughts. Unfortunately too many people read "dominion" as "the right to exploit and destroy".
