Pigeon BandI am a begining wildlife rehabiltator and recently got a Rock Dove which is banded. It is a silver band with ridges @top & bottom. It reads " NPA 02[ sideways ]EA811. I was unsuccessful in contacting the area rep for the NPA, and was wondering if anyone out there might know of resources that would be helpful. This Rock Dove is quite unusal in appearence the the one's I usually get.
Thankyou, Bruce

Hi Bruce and welcome to pigeons.com. Generally speaking, I have little success in tracing the NPA bands. If you care to call the secretary of the organization, she can at least tell you who the original purchaser of that band was. Her contact information is at:
http://www.npausa.com/sectreas.htm I quickly checked the AU and IF sites and didn't find any club with a code of EA. There is a EAV (East Antelope Valley) which is a possible for this bird. The major sites for tracing bands are: http://www.pigeon.org http://www.ifpigeon.com Thanks for helping the bird! What does it look like .. might be a show/fancy breed instead of a racer. Thank you Terry for the comments and links. The code is definitly EA.
This bird is taller and slimmer than the usual one's I get. It is reddish brown about the head, chest and tail. The body is whitish with faint reddish brown smudges. It also has a red eye ring and redish@ the bill close to the head. I got it about two weeks ago with a wing injury/break which we have wrapped we also gave antibiotics for 10 days. He looks well. The registerd wildlife rehabber said to leave the wing wrapped for about three weeks. Then we will see how good our wing wrapping skills are. Thanks Again, Bruce

Hi Bruce,
Thanks for the update and description of the bird. It does sound like one of the fancy/show breeds and is probably not the strongest of flyers or best of homing pigeons. Do you have an interest in keeping the bird if the owner can't be located or would you rather find a good home for it? It's nice to see another pigeon rehabber join us here at pigeons.com .. there are quite a few of us here these days. Terry Whatley |

Bruce,
The breed sounds like a New York Flying Flight. Somebody else on the list had one similiar to your description & that's what it turned out to be. Watch around your neighbor hood for a tight flock of pigeon seemingly circling in one spot. Flights are pretty much a line-of-site bird with limited homing ability and probably isn't to far from home. Chris |

Hi Terry,
Actually I am currently caring for three rock doves, one mourning dove, and three other species of passerines many with injuries that could prevent release back into the wild [ depressing ]. The banded rock dove is our first attempt to wrap and heal awing injury, so I have no idea of his/her prognosis for a few more days. I have an adult wild rock dove that came in not able to fly, but other wise no apparent injury's. I will " test " his flight skill's in a day or two. He/she is grey & white. The 3rd rock dove we have raised from about 1 day old [ it came with two live- one died - plus two eggs abandoned @ an industrial remodel. Now some 7 weeks old, beautiful grey/white and test flying in the house. We are gettng pretty attached but he doesn't appear imprinted YET! We wouldn't be adverse to finding good homes for them .... but would prefer they have some freedom and care. Bruce Lowe P.S. Can photos be posted on this BB ?

It's wonderful that you are caring for all those birds. Keep up the good work!
No, we are not able to post photos here at pigeons.com but many members have set up a free account at http://www.webshots.com and then upload their pictures to their albums there and just post the URL to them here in a message. Terry Whatley |

Thankyou Chris, I got an e-mail from Cindy in Mesa, AZ which included a picture of her " pij ". They could be twins. I have never seen the breed in the area. But that doesn't mean they are not around. An employee of a local dairy found it [ at the dairy ]. I guess the one I have is the " New York Flying Flight " breed you spoke of. So just how many different breeds of rock dove would be found in the wild ?
Bruce
