Pigeon found with Broken Wing

My son and I found a pigeon with it's wing hanging to the ground. We observed him for 5 minutes or so and watched in horror as it walked in to traffic and was nearly hit by three cars when he tried to fly. It really looked to be trying to commit suicide. I know that is not the case by it sure looked like it. We ran out of our car and cornered him/her and I grabbed it. We took it home and placed it in our xlarge dog crate. I examined the wing and found a hole/bite out of the right wing just at the bend. It was bloddy and had bone showing. I decided to put it in a smaller crate made for my cats that confined it. I hoped this would keep it from flapping the wing and further causing damage. Well 5 weeks later after daily cage cleaning and feeding Pidge Rodriquez, that is what we named her, looks great!!! The scab fell off the wound and the bone is no longer showing. So with sadness in our eyes and hearts I took the crate out to the open yard out back. She flew out and landed in a near by tree. As we walked back to our house she followed. Then actually flew down to the ground on our porch. Three months later Pidge Rodriquez has a T-Stand perch I built and a cubby hole in my rafters under the porch. She follows us around on the ground when I Bar-B-Que etc... It is incredible!!!!
I just wanted to relay a positive success story.
I thank God for the success cause I had no idea how to care for a Pigeon.
Peace Out
Robb

Hello Robb and welcome to pigeons.com! Thank you so much for your good news story with a happy ending. All too often things don't work out as we would have hoped for our little pigeon friends, so it's very nice to know of your success with Pidge Rodriguez. Very well done! Pigeons are quite amazing creatures aren't they?

Hello Robb & Welcome to Pigeons.com.

Many thanks to you & your family for taking the time to help 'Pidge Rodriquez'.

A success story is welcome 24/7.

I'm curious, did you, or anyone, tape Pidge's wing in place? If not, & the wing has healed in an unnatural position, she may not have complete flying capabilities. Does the wing continue to hang down?

I have three pijjies with irreversible wing damage. They can fly to a point, but are unable to free fly for any length of time.
Please keep an eye on Pidge as she may get into a situation while flying about the yard that she cannot recover from & become the victim of a predator.
Thanks for sharing your story with us. Please let us know how Pidge is getting along.
Cindy

Hey all,
Thanks for the warm welcome.

I did not splint her wing. And yes it does hang down hmmm, maybe 1/2 inch lower than the other wing. When I found her it was 3 to 4 inches lower. The first two or three days she flew about the area a bit, but you may be right. I have never seen her attempt sustained flight of any duration. I just thought maybe I fattened her up so much that she was now to fat and lazy to fly far. However, she manuvers wonderfully about her self proclamined territory.
Luckily she does not venture out of my fenced back yard. She mingles in the yard with the hundredes of other birds that I feed throughout the year. I run off the hawk when I see him lurking about and make him stick to other areas so I won't have to watch the cruel reality of nature. Hey, hawks are birds too I suppose.
Do you know if I should have pidge Rodriquez treated for disease. I ask because I have two indoor birds that I would hate to infect. Not that they are anymore important but I paid big bucks for my Amazon and I would be mentally and financially devested if they became ill from me dragging in poop dust etc... off Pidge.
Thanks again, I am AMAZEDDDDDDDDD at your site. I never thought I would find a place to learn soooo much about pigeons. And yes birds are incredible. They are my favorite pets of all, but I would never tell my 2 dogs, 2 cats, 4 pigs and one fish that they are a distance second on my love list.
Peace out
An appreciative Robb
