I don't know the current status. You would have to call the number noted, give then the impound #, and see.

Thanks for the offer of help!

I will call tomorrow and see if the bird still needs to be retrieved. If it does, I wil try to arrange to pick it up and house it...but who/how/when can the tag number be traced? I am not familiar with the process. I can keep the bird if the owner cannot be traced, but would hate to keep a bird someone else is missing!

The band was sold by Foy's Pigeon Supplies, and I've already e-mailed them for the contact information for the purchaser of the band. You don't need to worry about doing that. We will either locate the owner or not and if located, that person will either want the bird back or not .. we just have to take it from there.

Most shelters are not set up for birds, and it is very, very stressful for them being there and subjected to the presence and noise of literally hundreds of dogs and cats, so we like to try and get them out ASAP while we track down the owners.

Thanks for your help, and please let me know what you find out.

The bird was rescued on May 5 after being attacked by a cat or a dog. It had an injured leg which they have treated and it also could not fly at that time. No visible wing injuries. Vet tech says bird is recovering nicely, on antibiotics, eating and drinking, not at risk of euthanization. I got the specs on adopting the bird and the shelter hours etc... I will try to get down there today or tomorrow and let you know. In the meantime, if the owner contacts you, I will be checking here every few hours and you can let me know how to get in touch with them for us to coordinate getting the bird home.

Thanks so much! I'll let you know as soon as I have been able to reach the owner. How much is the adoption fee going to be? I will reimburse you for that (or hopefully have the owner do that).

The fee is just $5.00 so not to worry...I can't make it down until tomorrow AM so if the owner contacts you, they can retrieve the bird themselves today or if they want to do so themselves later so that I shouldn't go at all, please advise. I will be leaving by 9 AM or so and will check here just before I leave to see if the owner (if found) has other preferences. I will take the bird to my vet to double check its condition then to an isolation cage at my home until I get other instructions. Hopefully, I can return it to the owner but if not, I have the room to keep it here. If I do not hear to the contrary I will retrieve it tommorrow and let you know how it goes and how the owner can reach me directly.

This band is going to be untraceable. It was originally sold to someone in North Carolina. There is no answer and no recorder at the number given to me by Foy's.

Kippermon, feel free to adopt this bird if you like. If you would prefer that I take it and find it a home, that is fine also. Just let me know and many, many thanks for your assistance.

I will get the bird tomorrow and give it a good home. I am building a large new aviary for birds that cannot be released in safety so this one should fit right in. I will let you know when it is safe and sound. Thanks for checking on the band.

He's Home!

Well I drove into West LA, retrieved the pigeon from the shelter, took him to my vet here in town for exam and meds and now he is at home in the shop in an isolation cage. His appetite is good and he can walk, tho' with a limp. He got a deep laceration in one "thigh" muscle in a semi circle about 3 inches long. Also badly bruised. Looks like a dog got a good hold on him...They stapled it closed and have treated for infections. I keep him on oral and topical antibiotics and then take him back in a week to have the staples removed...Vet says his "grip" is surprisingly strong and while he may always be a bit gimpy, he should be able to fly. He came into the shelter with a "guarded" prognosis which is upgraded to "fair to good" now.

I am not too good at breeds..he is solid white, a fluff on his head and a "fan tail" when he struts. A bit greasy right now but a beautiful boy under the dirt...They estimated his age at 9 months but he is wearing a 2005 band...I will not be able to get pictures for a few days as my husband and daughter have the camera at her weekend horse show!

If I have any problems or questions I'll be back sooner, otherwise I will report after the final vet exam next Friday.
