Pigeons in the Snow

Well, I woke-up this morning to SNOW! Which is really odd for where I live at... The Mojave Desert!!

Well, a couple of my pigeons were out in the aviary enjoying a "snow shower" when I left for work... even though it was below freezing!

My normal 5 drive to work took over an hour!

They sent us home from work at noon... geeze, doesn't anyone in SoCal know how to drive in snow!!! (I grew-up in Pennsylvania)

Well, I'm home now, watching my birds. They don't seem to know nor care what snow is, although it is melting fast and I'm sure will be gone in a day.

So, any of you'all out there ever get the chance to see your pigeons in the snow? Pictures?? Well, mine aren't really "in" the snow, but there was a good blankett of snow on the ground outside, at least for a little bit!

Hi,

I live in british columbia, so my one pigeon hegee is the only one that is let out to experience the snow. she will almost land and then take off again. she won't sit on the snow on the ground but she will on the bird bath. All the same snow

Snow in CA, that is unexpected. Were there many accidents. I also ask my self the same question do ppl not know how to drive in snow. Right now we have about 2 feet in our yard. Solid snow and ice on our roads and ppl still drive crazy.

have a good day

snow

Lee here,
I live in central Kentucky and we have snow almost every year . I always train my birds in the snow as long as it is above 35 deg. They do seem to get disoriented quickly in the snow and it takes some time for them to home i always fly old birds with much homing experience. young birds are allowed out to experience the snow and to exercise in it they seem to enjoy it and eat lots of it ...I had one little bird that tried to bathe in it but gave up after a puzzled look ha ha ..........

Nature its life. The birds are part of that. They do fine. In the willd they have to hunt a little more for food. I was told years ago when in racers. When you loook around and the wild birds are flying yours need to be to. I tried this well. helps make the birds a little stronger I think. AND an edge on race day. Its different to get snow where you live.

Funny the perception and the surprise when people here "snow" in Calif. I was just talking to a guy in Ark. that said the same. This state is "huge" and is mainly agricultural, forest and desert on the south end with the Sierra Nevada mountain range that runs a good portion of of the state on the east side which I live in the foothills of. I can go due East and be above treeline in an hr and a half of mountain driving with peaks in the 10,000 plus ft range. I have property in the high country that is at least under 12 ft of snow right now. There is a whole lot more to this state than a few beaches in S. Calif and San Francisco Bay area.

It was snowing nicely yesterday afternoon so after Pearl and Dotty had their bath they sat at the window watching the snow come down, it looked just like one of those little bubbles that you shake up to create a mini snow storm.

All the feral pigeons around here seem to like the snow as well but it's not something new for them since they are canadian pigeons : ) ....though the squeakers who never experienced the snow try to catch the flakes and eat them, it's adorable to watch!

Hi Zig,

Your comment made me remember something from years ago. Back in the 80s, I used to work for a trucking company that had terminals all up and down the east coast.
There was a very rare "snowstorm" in Atlanta, Georgia. I will never forget how we all laughed when we received a message from the Atlanta terminal that they were closing for the day (this was around 11 am) as the whole city was shutdown due to the 1 1/2 inch snowfall. There were accidents and gridlock all over the place. The accidents and stuff, of course, weren't funny. But we just could not get over how much trouble a little bit of snow could cause. Guess driving in the snow is an acquired talent, but shutting down a city for 1 1/2 inches?? LOL

Linda

How true is that, Lin!!!! LOL. I guess living up here in Canada we take the snow with a grain of salt:P It is funny though how 1 and 1/2 inches of snow can bring one city to it's knees from a warm climate and for us up here, it's a walk in the park. Mind you, things have been very "green" up these last few years and many drivers are getting too used to the dry ashvalt.
