PLEASE HELP - SICK PIGEON FOUDN IN NYC

Hello,
I found an injured piegon in the street today and I do not know how to take care of the bird. I believe he cannot fly and also he is just feathers and bones. I dont know his age but he let out a few cries that sounded like baby peeps. I put him in a cage now and he is sleeping.
Can someone tell me what steps to take and also is there a NYC pigeon guru anyone knows of? I have seen one or two injured birds that others have tended to and if I come acorss another it would be great to have a mentor.
Also, i have canaries in a separate room in the apartment. are they in danger from disease? Sorry about all the questions. I am new to this. Thank you all!

Sorry,
I wanted to add more info to my own post. I just scrolled down and read some of the board so now I have more info.
One wing is def. not right. I should mention whenI found this pigeon a very crazy man was trying to drown him(that's right) holding him down with a broom and when I approached him he screamed get away, this bird is sick and its a mercy killing. I took the bird anyway, but I dont know if HE did that to his wing or if his wing was like that before the guy got hold of him. I dont know if he broke any other bones too becausae the man was pushign down on him.
I can feel his breast bone. I will put his bill in the water to see if he drinks. I dont want to wake him up though. He fell asleep immediately as soon as i Put him in the cage.
Should i try to feed him the dry dog chow watered down? he looks so weak, i 'm afraid to put anything down him.
Also I noticed this, he is your basic city piegon, gray but when I look at his feathers he has some white strands in them. they look like grey hairs.
Sorry about allthis i just wanted to add more info.

Hello and welcome to pigeons.com. Thank you so much for helping this poor pigeon. You are doing the right things by having brought him in and trying to get him to drink. If he is dehydrated, then the water is important at this point. The soaked dog food is probably a good food to start with. You could also make a gruel of human baby cereal or get Kaytee Exact hand feeding formula from a pet store.

If you have not yet read through the information in the Resources section (link at the top of the page here at pigeons.com), please have a look there.

We do have several NYC members here, and I have also forwarded a link to your post to a NYC based group of pigeon people.

Stand by for further info/assistance.

Terry

Hi - Thank you for rescuing this bird! I can't believe a man was trying to drown this bird. I'm not sure if we post vet/rehabbers' phone #'s here who have offered to help but I can email you privately. The bird may be stressed or in shock - I'm just guessing because I don't really know but it's unusual that the bird has fallen asleep in your presence, in my experience (which is not that vast). I will send to you privately a few numbers.

Thanks for writing!

Cathryn.

p.s. Sounds like if he's peeping could be a baby or a young 'un. I just sent a separate email!
(Maybe that's why he's sleeping ... if he's a young 'un.)

Hi

It's so lucky for this bird that you intervened! Imagine trying to kill a bird that might be saved.

Cathryn, thanks for sending the list. Terry, thanks for alerting us. Cathryn and i are in the local pigeon group. I'm e-mailing you privately to help you decide who to take it to.

Thanks for taking care of this baby. At least it seems to be a very young birdy.

A rehabber will keep the bird so that, if it's wing gets better, it can be released. A vet will give it back to you.

Al

Good morning,

Thank you for saving this baby, it was both compassionate and corageous of you. I hope that you will be able to get the Humane Society to tackle the man (if he had a broom he must live or work close by) because this won't be the first baby he has killed or the last one he will try to kill. His behaviour must be stopped.

Very young pigeons are often skin and bone and so weakened by malnutrition that they look ill...I even have one that I found in that state in a flock that I feed daily.

Warmth is important so that the pigeon uses all its energy for recovery, a hot water bottle wrapped around a towel or a lamp placed over the crate or cage so that the warmth reaches the pigeon are good.

Can you give us an update on whether it is eating or drinking?

Cynthia

Al,
Do you have any news about the situation? I had sent an email to this person offering to take the bird but received no response.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who offered info. i will be calling the nunbers you gave me. I contacted a vet on Sunday who didn't specialize in birds but told me to put some piegon seed in, mixed with some oyster shell and gravel on the bottom (grit). well, he (or she) has been eating and drinking very much. I think he still is not flying. He seems very much alert but his wing doesnt look right. I will see what the rehabber says.
Thank you all SO SO MUCH! I will keep you posted.

Thanks for taking care of the squeeker.

Please don't wait to call one of the rehabbers. If its wing is okay, it may not be flying simply because it's young. So don't worry about it being releasable til it gets an exam.
