should i do this to my baby squab? my squeeker is 6 weeks old and it still doesnt know how to eat by itself. last week i was gone so i couldnt take care of him so my mom did but she didnt teach him how to eat by itself. i have a white homer pair that has a squab that is 5 weeks old. they are the only ones in a loft.
could i put squeeker with the white homers squab so that squeeker can learn how to eat? the white squab i dont think it eats by itself but probably does. should i do this switch? |

You could try putting both of the babies together and see if the one that has been raised by its parents is able to help teach your baby to eat on its own. I wouldn't risk putting your baby in with the adults as they may attack it.

Young pigeons learn to self-feed by watching other birds. You can teach your bird by placing some seed onto a flat surface, then pecking at the food with your finger. Then hand feed the baby a few seeds, then repeat the pecking with your finger. Continue this for as long as it takes for the young bird to get the idea. Reduce the amount you hand feed during the weaning process. Having a hungry baby makes for better learning.
Another way to teach young birds to self-feed is to place them into a small cage then set the cage near some adult birds feeding station. The young bird will watch and learn. Good luck, Carl |

Hello,
I found a squab, fully feathered, not many feathers under the wings though and a bit of a short tail with some baby yellow feathers on his head. He was in the lobby and so I picked him up and brought him upstairs, He couldn't eat or drink, instead of going through the whole handfeeding thing I tried some tough love and since he was really hungry he started pecking and trying real hard to eat (A few of my flock birds jumped onto the window and were watching him inside so I put seeds out for them too so he could watch the big ones eat and copy them, he learned to drink and eat on his own really quick. The best thing is to let him watch the others.. Maybe you could put him in the loft and watch him so that the others won't peck at him but at the same time he could watch the adults eat. Mary
