The stories of Traveler, Stinky, Jewel, Moonbeam, and the new arrival

Traveler is a beautiful white male pigeon with some black and iridescent coloring around his neck. Traveler was found at the local Green Thumb nursery with the entire right side of his head looking like raw hamburger. The kind folks at the nursery brought him to me. I got him the veterinary treatment he needed, and Traveler is now a healthy (though blind in the right eye) senior citizen. Traveler was wearing a 1987 band. Since the club where he originated kept records for only five years, we were unable to locate Traveler's owner.

Stinky is a lovely dark gray bird with checkered markings on her wings. Stinky was found in a trash can in a public park where she had been thrown in and left to die. She had a badly broken leg and was extremely emaciated. She is named Stinky not because of being in the trash can but because she emanated the most awful smell for the first several months I had her. According to my vet, the smell was due to her emaciation and poor health at the time. Stinky is now Traveler's best buddy.

Jewel also suffered from a broken leg and was lucky enough to be spotted by my friend Kiem who rescued him from a large office complex. Jewel is also dark grey with even darker band markings on his wings. Jewel's leg is now healed and fully functional, and he is a welcome member of our little flock.

Moonbeam is a grey and white female who came to me with an old and very serious wing fracture. While my vet tried pinning the wing, it appears at this point that most of the wing will have to be amputated as soon as Moonbeam has regained enough of her strength and health to survive the surgery.

The currently unnamed new arrival is a female with the same coloring as Jewel. She flew into a window on Feb. 27 and was rescued by a kind lady named Patty. This bird was treated by Patty's vet and then brought to me for long term care. The bird is currently unable to use its legs and feet. There is some movement in the legs but the feet are totally unable to grasp with the toes. We are hoping that this little one will fully recover in time.

Thank you for allowing me to share these stories about my pigeons.
