You need to worry about the wing feathers allowing the bird to fly not the tail, the tail is for balance and for slowing the bird down when it comes in for a landing, the bird flying really doesn't have much to do with the tail other then balance, the wing gives them their lift.

Please keep the pigeon without the tail inside until she grows out the new one. She may be able to fly but is not 100% and may become victim to hawk, if something doesn't look quite right when she flies. The tail also enables them agility, turning and putting on the brakes.

Hi Heather, They can fly with out a tail, but they will have differculty steering and braking. The tail is part of the braking system for birds. Thus no tail no brakes,so there will be some very hard landings. Years ago i had a race bird lose his tail during a hawk attack. For three days this bird flew past the loft but would not land I am sure he must have landed some place during the night, well when he finaly land at the loft he hit the landing board like a brick. When i checked him he was preaty brused up. If i were you i would not fly this bird until his tail is at least half way grown back. GEORGE SIMON
