WANTED: PIGEON STORIES!

I want pigeon stories! Specifically, I'm looking for true stories about special pigeons and their human friends. As an example, see "Encounter With Bernie", elsewhere on this bulletin board.

Both finished and rough manuscripts are welcome. Send to me at: raynjudy@milwpc.com

Hi, Walt!

Yes, most certainly close and lock it before dark. I have no expertise in this, but i do know some basics...Raccoons will be your most fearsome predators as well as weasels, and raptors like owls. Raccoons and weasels, being as intelligent as little kids will be capable of undoing simple latches. You'd be wise to install a hasp and padlock. Giving your birds full liberty in the day will also leave them open to hawks, and other raptors of the day. Pigeons take their chances like all of us. Most pigeon fanciers allow their birds to fly at designated times throughout the day, to return to the coop for pigeon busines, whatever it may be. Carl has a traditional loft and much experience in the ways of the pigeons' world.

Good Luck,

Judy

Pigeon Stories

Hi Ray,

I have a pigeon story in the rough.

I found a day old pigeon in a basket on a subway grate in greenwich Village, NYC. The baby in the basket inspired me to name him 'Moses'. I hand fed him for six weeks and than snuck him on the Adirondack Bus Up State. He is now living with two German Shepherds, a 4 pound dog and cat in my log cabin outside Woodstock.

He likes to greet guest and perches on their heads. He is either usually on me or follows me around watching me from above somewhere. Sometimes he likes to ride the German Shepherds and peck at the resting cat.

He is so funny I am thinking of writing a children's book, 'The True Story of Moses'. I would make it educational and do my own illustrations along with photos. Any suggestions from you or other pigeon enthustiasts?

Thanks you,

A Pigeon and General Animal Lover,

Camille Romanovich

Hi, Camille:

Go for it!

We have a book in the works--a complilation of Pigeon Stories like yours. We would welcome your participation!

If you'd like to participate, please respond to me at: raynjudy@milwpc.com

I see no reason why your work could not be republished in the format of a children's story too.

They do steal your heart, don't they?

Hi Ray,
One day last summer, a veteran flyer and good friend of mine, was out cleaning his loft when he found a pigeon in his young bird section that wasnt part of his racing team although it did look very familiar. After checking the band number with his records he discovered that this racer was lost at 6 mos. old on a 150 mile young bird race in 1998. Not only did it return 2 years later but it ousted the new occupant of his old perch. What a memory huh? My friend felt this bird must have followed other birds that day and accidentally entered someone elses loft where it was held prisoner the last couple of years. This is unfortunately not uncommon. Anyway it must have escaped or its new owner hoped it would stay after 2 years. This just goes to show how strong the homing instinct can be. This bird is now a successful part of his old bird team.

Hey Ryan, I have a story about a pigeon I had in South Carolina I was in the Navy living in Navy housing. It was a Big NO NO to have Farm animals. Well the wife and I are big time animal lovers and I’m a 4th generation pigeon racer. I met a guy a few miles from the house whom I told that I was going to start raising racing pigeons again. He gave me a hen and told me not to ever let here go because she would fly back west from where he bought her. Well one day cleaning my loft I notice that she had grain stuck to her crop (outside) after looking to her more closely I noticed her crop had been sliced by a cat and her food was falling out from her wound. I took her to a Vet about 45 miles from the house. The Vet said to give them 3 days and call them. Well 3 days went by and I called. They thought since the bird was banded they would let it go and it would head home. Well after finding this out I was heart broken. I had this pigeon for over 8 months and had never flown her. Anyway I went out that evening to feed the other birds and there she was on top of my loft looking all happy to be home. Still today it gives chills that she had flown all the way home with out ever leaving my loft and found her way home. This is why I love the Homing Pigeon. Rick Mathis

IT'S A BIRD . . . IT'S A PLANE . . . NO, IT'S THE F.B.I.!!!
In 1997 the FBI was trying to solve a murder case that happened here on December 23, 1987. They were in town and talking to potential witnesses. In 1987 I hung out at the bars alot and happened to see the victim shortly before he was killed when he came into the bar I was in. The next day when I heard he'd been murdered, I offered to sign a witness statement as the police were asking for the public's assistance and wanted to talk to anyone who'd seen the victim the previous night. So I did my civil duty and filled out a witness statement. The murder went unsolved for ten years until one afternoon, two FBI agents showed up at my house and wanted to ask me some questions, basically what I remembered from that night. I invited them in and tried to recall what I remembered. During the interview, Eggbert was flying from the recliner to the couch, trying to figure out who these guys were that were in HIS house. He then flew over on the recliner and walked back and forth on the back of it and complained, complained and complained. Right before they left, one of the agents asked me if he could pet Eggbert. I said, "Sure!" But as he put his hand out, Eggbert turned around and snapped his hand, causing the guy to jerk his hand away and quickly shove it in his jacket pocket and hidden away from any further pigeon attacks! Eggbert just continued to complain and the two agents left. (For those of you who are interested, the case was solved and the murderer got "life" in prison).

GRANDMA'S PURSE NEEDED MORE "DECORATIONS"
For the most part, my mom likes Eggbert, though she crabs about him pooping all the time and always checks her clothing before leaving to make sure there's not any poop anywhere. My mom is 83 years old and attends church regularly and is in good health for her age. She also goes to weekly "Hen Parties" on Wednesday mornings when a few of the ladies from the church get together for coffee after morning church services. She's pretty finicky about her clothes, etc., also. It's important to her to look nice when she goes somewhere. One afternoon she called me on the phone and read me the riot act because she'd been carrying her purse around for two days with dried bird poop running down one side of it, but since it had "mixed in" with the design on that side, she hadn't noticed it until after she'd gotten home from the latest "Hen Party". She was mortified when she saw it, wondering if any of her friends had noticed it but were too polite to mention it. I had all I could do to keep from laughing, but I assured her that nobody noticed it. She had also written a letter to my sister who lives near Illinois. My sister got a kick out of the letter and told me that mom called Eggbert "THAT bird . . . " And then summed it up by saying, "She was pissed . . ." Mom visits me often since we live close by each other, but now she does a complete visual inspection of her purse before she leaves my house!

More stories later! DC

Hey, guys!

If you look closely, that post by me is two years old... I did make other requests--the last one got no replies. Several weeks ago, I closed the offer.

Both Hilary and DC were invited to the project, and both accepted!

Proceed without Eggbert and Hercules? Not on my watch!

Within the past two weeks the project has acquired four new authors--all experts in their own right.

I hope to get the outline out to all involved by next week.

Those of you signed on shouldn't hesitate to contact me with any questions at: raynjudy@milwpc.com

DC:

So Eggbert was unimpressed by FBI credentials. Perhaps a Sky Marshall would fare better!
