Another Baby pigeon RescueHello everyone, normally I really watch very carefully when it comes to rescuing a baby bird, I analyze the condition, location, dangers, and health of the baby pigeon we all pass by , sometimes help isn t really needed that badly, usually the parents are keeping and eye and feeding their offsprings right on the streets, but other times when I see a baby emanciated or close to it, I HAVE to help, this it my case yet again today, I picked up this almost emanciated baby, I gave water and gatorade first, then I picked up moist cat food and fed little chunks, baby is so weak that I had to water in between most of the tidbits for it to swallow, I managed to get a half way full crop, he is relaxing in his nest right now at home, but there is also a breathing problem, its respiration is kind of open beak at times, I read about baytril , but also read is quite dangerous, specially in a weak inmune system, can anyone tell me what should I use ? I am posting a pic of it...thanks

Hi Alberto,
Thank you for helping this needy youngster. It is extremely important to follow the guidelines in this link first: http://www.pigeons.biz/forums/showthread.php?t=8822 Have you looked inside the beak? Do you see any growths, either yellow cheezy looking or white? Make sure the crop empties completely. Do you have baby bird formula you can feed it?

He will need some extra heat if he is sick.
For respiratory problems Tetracycline or doxycycline is prefered. You can not give any calcium supplements with it though. Baytril is great and many of us have used it also on babies. It can have side effects though. If the baby is getting worse he absolutely antibiotic and I would give the Baytril otherwise he might not make it. Cat food is not the best choise for pigeons, works if nothing else is available. You can feed him seeds, baby bird formula or baby cereal. Good luck with this sweety. Reti |

When Treesa was asking about cheesy growths, she was hinting at the possibility of canker (Trichomoniasis), which sometimes causes breathing difficulties especially in youngsters like this one. That said, it would mean you'd need to give it an anti-canker like Metronidazole (Flagyl), Carnidazole (Spartrix), Ronidazole (?Trichocure?) or some other one. Open-beak breathing really isn't good at all.

Another Heartbreak!Baby did not make it..found it dead this morning, had to be some kind of breathing disorder, there was no signs of Canker, basically baby was just bones and feathers, maybe it was too late to try something, I know cat food was not the best , it was just emergency and very moist and soft from the corner deli..I am always sorry when this happens..May he or she be in a better place . alberto
