Date: 2012-05-20, 11:55AM CDT Reply to: bc8tw-3027006254@comm.craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?] My younger sister brought me a baby black bird. She was not aware that she wa probably harming the bird more than helping when she brought it home. But it is very small still with fuz on its head an its eyes are still closed. I am wandering what to feed this poor little thing as it is constantly wanting food also i have it in a bird cage but am not sure if i need to put anything to keep it warm ect. Please help i do not want it to die because of my little sisters lack of knowledge i have also added pictures incase age matters on my action plan. Please email me with any help you may have. Thank you for your time

You can feed soaked kitten chow...so it's soft. I use tweezers, take pieces about peas size or a bit bigger and when the baby opens the mouth, drop the pieces at the back of the throat.
A baby this size will probably eat 5-7 pieces per feeding and likely will eat every 30 minutes form sun up to sun down. I can't tell for sure from the pictures...you said the baby is a black bird...could it be a starling?

It's NOT a starling. Starling mouth inside would be yellow and "lips" also .. inside of mouth in this baby is pink and "lips" are black/dark.
This little one needs to get to a permitted rehabber ASAP. Charis has given good advice on what to feed for now, but PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO KEEP AND RAISE THIS BABY ON YOUR OWN. It is an insectivore and needs a diet very high in animal based protein. Are you in Lincoln Nebraska? Thank you for helping the little one, but please, let's get it to a permitted person or facility that can provide the proper diet and housing. Terry |

It also should be fed drowned or beheaded mealworms .. Also meant to note that the eyes should be open in
this youngster. It's way big/old enough for the eyes to be open. If they are not, then the bird is in trouble. Terry |

I tried to find a rehabber in Lincoln 2 years ago and could not, they all said to put the bird down. My bird had a broke wing, I just put a sock over it for a few weeks and its ok now. So I wouldn't know where to go with this little guy.

You're right of course Terry. They would be yellow there. I had forgotten about that. So long since I've seen a baby starling, but yes, I do remember that now.

looks like a grackle to me
here's a link to a good handfeeding formula http://www.squirrelsandmore.com/reha...irds-3-lb.html or 2012 ZuPreem®-FoNS© (Recipe A) ● 1 cup (136 g) ZuPreem® Premium Ferret Diet ● 1.67 cups (395 cc) water ● 5 Tb (30 g) dried egg white ● 2 tsp (9 g) corn oil ● 1.0 g (~1/4 tsp) Lafeber Avi–EraTM bird vitamins ● 5.0 g (~1/2 tsp) active–culture plain yogurt Pre-soak kibble in water (do not drain any excess) until soft; blend all ingredients in food processor. this bird is a fledgling and should be returned to where it was found, put in a bush or branch of tree, otherwise it is a federally protected bird and needs to be turned over to a federally permitted wildlife rehaber |
