Bird On GroundJust saw a little black-colored bird on the ground looking up at a tree. It wasn't fleeing from me, so maybe there is more to it such as injury? Do birds freeze up and not run away if a baby and scared though? I suppose it may be a baby? But not sure. Should I move or leave around to see if still there by night fall? Perhaps it is learning to fly? Or could it be injured and that is why on ground? Obviously it is staying near family, since there are other birds in that tree. Maybe it fell? Do they fall and get injured? Think it'll be ok? Maybe it still learning to fly? I hear from people that they if they are learning to fly, they do so from the next? But I assume they may land on ground while still learning to fly, and have problems getting back up, no? Think I have seen that. Not checking messages on here, so please call me at 516-813-5061 or email at secretagentman84@yahoo.com - thanks! Brett

According to the area code, this person is in NY, possibly Long Island.

hi brett, just saw this thread now, sometimes they are on the ground because they are fledglings and it will take them a few days to learn to fly.
if his body is feathered and his tail has some length to it compared to the adult, i'd say maybe half as long as an adults, it's normal for them to be on the ground, they sort hop around on low branches of bushes and such, and the parents take care of them and show them the ropes. if he has no visible tail and his feathers are still wrapped up like quills he fell from the nest and needs help it's best to put him back in the nest unless he's injured, if you can't get him back call your nearest wildlife rehabilitator, i know you have alot of great ones in ny state please let us know what happened |
