Mourning Dove Questions

My Aunt, in San Jose, California, called because she has a very tame mourning dove in her yard. This dove seems to be hanging out in her neighborhood but there are predators. She's afraid the dove is at risk because it's so friendly. Other wise the bird seems to be healty. The last two mornings she almost steps on it as it follows her for food. It's also tame enough just to be able to pick up. She has a rehabber she can take it to but fears the bird will be put down if too tame to release. I would be happy to take the dove but am fairly far away. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Jess

She could have been raised by someone who then figured it's ok to just release her. Best to take her in and maybe she'll be able to find a licensed rehabber who will not put her to sleep.

It could also be young and not terribly skittish.

Road Trip

Could she keep it inside until you are able to collect it?
A road trip might be fun. Give you a chance to bond with the bird during the drive home.

From everything my aunt said this does sound like a tame bird that doesn't understand the outside. I think I will call her rehabber and ask a few questions. That will probably help me decide what to do.

Thanks for the advice!

After talking to my aunt this bird may be a little wilder than I thought. It only stops by mornings and waits for her. After that is spends it's day else where. She's also concerned it could be hurt by her dog or neighborhood cats. Like me she loves all animals and called me to make sure she was doing the right thing. I called the rescue center and they sounded like they are a good one. If my aunt can catch the bird she's going to take it to them. They have an aviary full of mourning doves for this one to join. It's sometimes hard to know the right thing to do but in this case the center sounds like a good place for the bird.
