Pitiful Mourning Dove ..These are extremely unpleasant pictures, so look at your own
risk. This Mourning Dove came in around 5 PM today .. it was possibly mauled by the family dog but also appears to have one of the worst cases of avian pox I've seen in a long while. Looking for confirmation that this is indeed avian pox, which I assume it is, and am also assuming that the bloody injuries are due to the dog getting to the bird. The bird is also extremely thin .. no big surprise there. It will be transferred to my permitted rehabber friend this evening assuming it lives that long and will almost certainly be euthanized, again assuming that it's still alive by the time it gets to her. http://www.rims.net/2005Aug18 Terry |

Oh god Terry, this is so pitiful...so sad looking...and a little youngster it seems...
Still, we have all seen remarkable occasions of recovery, and I hope certainly this may be one of them... Love, Phil las Vegas |

Well, if he did, it would be a miracle if he still had his eyesight, bless his heart!

Terry,
How dreadful for the poor little dove Animals in those conditions aren't meant to survive. The dog attack sealed that little doves fate, poor thing is at rest now. |

Terry,
At least with you, that poor little thing died safe and loved. Daryl |

Thank you everyone for the kind comments. This little dove was one of those cases where I felt I had to try but knew that the odds of me helping it and of it living were so very slim. I probably should have taken it to Dr. Lee for immediate euthanasia, but I let my heart overrule my head on this one.

The poor little thing! It was brave of you to try to give it a chance when it was in such a bad way.

That poor little one didn't look to have much of a chance, but I'm sure it felt the safety of your care and maybe just as well to move on in your care where it felt loved.
