sugar ants

i've got sugar ants in my loft. it is a little black ant. everything sold around here is for fire ants [which i dont have] and tried them all. no luck with putting it around my loft.the black ants walk on through to invade my loft.they dont mess with my adult birds but will get my babies in 1 to 2 days.is there anything i can treat the inside of my loft with without harming my birds?
