What A Lot Of Little Surprises Today!

A few new pics from today ..

http://www.rims.net/2008May28

In addition to these there was also a barely fledged House Finch that was
supposed to be a sparrow and two Mourning Dove eggs .. The little finch is pretty badly injured but will hopefully make it until tomorrow when it can be transferred to the songbird rehabber. The Mourning Dove eggs were sent my way to see if a pair of my domestic pigeons or doves will finish incubating them. The nest was destroyed and one parent killed by a hawk attack.

Hi Terry,

That has to be the most unusual babies ever left on a front porch, or near it anyway. But it's probably not unusual for you.

Please let us know what "develops" in regards to those Mourning Dove eggs, hope they have a happy ending.

Thanks for taking the time to share.

I don't think they are mockingbirds because of the reddish on the wings??

Terry,
You do find some of the best surprises on your porch! I think those are red tailed hawk babies. They sure are cute little fuzzballs.

LOL Terry, your house must have an invisible sign on it.

I loved seeing the baby hawks and sure hope they make it.

Like Grim, I don't think those are mockers with the red on the wings. The only thing I can think of is a redbird but yet the red on them is all over and not just in spots. If you find out, please share.

I looked at the picture again and noticed the feathers are still in their shaft so maybe when they unfurl they will be a solid red.

Terry, I sent the little UFO's picture to my rehabber friend and she is thinking it is a Robin.

Thanks for looking and posting, everyone! I suppose those little ones could be robins instead of mocking birds. The "red" in the photos is much more pronounced than in the flesh .. it is actually more of a chestnut brown color. They haven't been transported to the songbird rehabber yet, so I still don't have a definite ID on them.

The little hawks have gone to the raptor rehabber and have been identified as Coopers Hawks.

I candled the Mourning Dove eggs last night and though it appears that there were embryos in each egg, I don't think they are viable any longer, but we shall give them a chance and see.

The incoming haven't started arriving yet today, so who knows what little treasures may show up this evening. I know there is an injured pigeon and some type of little duckling scheduled to arrive shortly.

Hmmmm......

Are you sure its smart to have 2 hawks in the house with all those babies? Considering the parents of the Mourning dove eggs were killed by Hawks....

Oh, and if you find out wich person put those hawk babis on your doorstep, give them a slap for me, will you?

Well, the three hawk babies went to the raptor rehabber this morning. I could no more dislike them than I could dislike a baby pigeon, dove, duck, or goose. They didn't ask for the hand that life dealt them and deserve to live like all the rest .. and live, they shall. My rehabber friend is a wizard with these little birds of prey.

As to who put them on my porch .. obviously some well meaning person who wished to remain anonymous.

It's all OK and has worked out just fine. No loss of life of any of the babies.
