Farewell Dear Stinky aka Catherine The GreatI am sad to have to post about the passing of my beloved Stinky today. Stinky is one of the first pigeons I got in for rehab, and she has been a true treasure over the years. I found an old photo of her dated April 20, 2001 in which she is standing and looking good, so I know she was here before that date by at least a few months, and probably longer than that.
Stinky was found in a trash can at Carl Thornton Park in Santa Ana. She had a broken leg, was emaciated, and had been thrown away as if she were nothing but garbage. A good friend of mine works at this park and found Stinky when she was emptying the trash can, and the rest is history. Stinky came to me, had her leg set by Dr. Lee, and went on to live here for many years. The name Stinky came not from her time in the trash can but from the terrible odor her body had for several months. Dr. Lee told me the smell was due to her body literally devouring itself trying to survive and not starve. The Catherine The Great name was given to her by my friend that found and rescued her. This person felt that a pigeon with such a will to live deserved a magnificent name .. thus Catherine The Great. Still, Stinky always was and always will be Stinky to me. Dr. Lee told me to be sure that Stinky was very well fed and that she had to gain a good amount of weight. I remember at a follow up vet visit that Dr. Lee told me that Stinky was probably the fattest bird he had ever seen and that I couldn't release her until she had slimmed down a bit and gotten into shape So much for following the doctor's orders! Eventually Stinky's leg healed, she got in tip top shape, and I decided I would release her on Memorial Day in honor of my mother who had passed away in March of that year. Well, Stinky wasn't having any of being released and flew to Traveler's cage and wouldn't leave for love nor money. Stinky always had a thing for Traveler, but he never showed any interest in her. So, the years went by and eventually Darth Vader came in as a rescue. Boy! It was love at first sight for Darth and Stinky. They became a devoted pair and have remained so. Here is a picture of Stinky and Darth on Christmas Eve 2005 ![]() Fly free my beloved bird. You will be missed. Terry |

Squeaks and I also send our sincere condolences, Terry! I hope Darth is doing all right at this sad time.
I've posted this before, but thought Catherine the Great (Stinky) would "see" and agree...may Mary's poem bring you comfort... DO NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE AND WEEP Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am in a thousand winds that blow, I am the softly falling snow. I am the gentle showers of rain, I am the fields of ripening grain. I am in the morning hush, I am in the graceful rush Of beautiful birds in circling flight, I am the star shine of the night. I am in flowers that bloom, I am in a quiet room, I am the birds that sing, I am in each lovely thing. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there. I did not die. I am so sorry for your loss, Terry. What a contrast your tears are to the callousness that almost accompanied her on her last journey. Thanks to you the greater proportion of her life must have been a happy, comfortable experience.

Well, me too, Terry. I always cry. I'm really sorry. I hope Darth Vader can adjust to being without Stinky. Sometimes it is hard on the mate. Stinky was a lovely little girl and lived the good life with you and Darth.

Terry, I wish there were more yous, and less birds in need. Stinky was beautiful and healthy, and lived a wonderful long life with her handsome mate. Thank you for making that possible.
