Farewell SmokeyMy beloved pet pigeon, Smokey, passed away during the night last night. Smokey was a very special pigeon and will be sorely missed. He was originally rescued by a young lady who runs a small mammal rescue in my area. Smokey had very severe neuro symptoms from which he never completely recovered. His original rescuer had tube fed him for two years and had gotten him checked by a qualified avian vet. No definite diagnosis was found for his neuro problems.
When Smokey first arrived I also tube fed him but soon discovered that he was quite capable of eating and drinking on his own. He just needed deep non-tippable bowls and could manage just fine. He never liked being tube fed, so I am sure he was very happy to be allowed to do things for himself. Since Smokey had been with his original rescuer for two years and with me for slightly more than three, he would have been at least five years old when he passed away. Smokey was his usual self yesterday, so his passing during the night came as quite a shock. Fly with the angels, Smokey. I'll miss you. What a lovely pijie!
Of course, words will never fill the void in your heart but his memories will always bring a warm loving feeling. You will know he's close. You gave him a wonderful quality of life that not all are fortunate to find. He's flying free now and will always be watching and helping you in your work with the "specials." Mr. Squeaks and I send WARM LOVING COMFORTING HUGS to help ease the distress of his passing. |

Terry, I have seen that picture before and loved that little bird from the gitgo. I think I may also have had Smokey on my desktop before. He looks so sweet and shy.
I am truly sorry he passed away. Hugs to you.

Oh, Terry, I am so sorry for the unexpected loss of such a special bird. I remember him from the photo contest - such a stunning appearance and a sweet face. For the three years you had him, he had an excellent care and lots of interesting activities for his pigeon brain. Good to know that there is now a very handsome new pigeon angel flying around!

Oh, Terry, I am so sorry you lost Smokey. He is beautiful & his face is so sweet. It's always hard when we lose a pet, but when it's unexpected, it's worse.
Smokey was blessed to have come into your care, especially concerning the tube feeding. As you said, I'm sure he was very happy (& grateful) to be allowed to do things for himself. You will see him again, Terry. Please take care of yourself. Phyll |

I'm so sorry Terry
It's horrible you lost your Smokey, he's a beautiful pidgie. I'm sure Squidget and all of other lost pidgies gave him a wonderful greeting as he crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.
