Frosty, 3/7/1999 - 1/23/2007This is a very hard thread for me. Our beautiful hen Frosty died during the night 1/23/2007. She had appeared fine until Lewis took their treat out that afternoon and she wouldn't come down to eat and was sitting on the perch with her eyes closed. She was always first in the seed bowl and bath water.
The rehabber who trained us took a much needed weekend off 8 years ago and we were taking care of her birds. Lewis had gone over early on the morning of 3/7/99 to check on them and noticed a baby had hatched but at that time the parents were sitting on her. When we both went back about 4 hours later to do the main feeding/watering, he found the baby totally alone and no evident life. She was so cold and limp that I just handed him a plastic bag to put the body in but he said to put her on the dining room table in the sun. I went upstairs and about 20 minutes later went to check on the body and lo and behold she was gasping for breath. We took her home with us and she thrived, growing so fast. She was the first newborn we ever cared for and the first bird we decided to keep. She went to the beach with us, every trip, and grew up to be a very serene, loving and gentle bird. She was the matriarch of the aviary. I could write volumes about this big, sweet girl. She was our favorite pigeon and we loved her very, very much. We took her for a necropsy 1/23/07. The pathologist told me this morning that she had a growth on her ovary that he believes was cancer. He has sent tissues to the vet school as well as some of his colleagues so we will know more in a few days. She had no viral or bacterial infections and he said it definitely was not the same disease that killed Simon & Ringo this fall.

Maggie,
When I saw Frosty's name in the "Hall of Love," I said, "Oh, no!" I am so sorry for your loss. Thank God that Lewis gave her a chance that very first day. Frosty was meant to live & love you, & you loved her in return. She was so pretty. Maggie, know that Frosty is feeling fine now & you will see her again. Please take good care of yourself. May God give you strength & comfort. Phyll |

Maggie and Lewis, I'm very sorry to hear about Frosty, I know this must be a very difficult time for you both. She was one adorable baby and a gorgeous gal and so fortunate that Lewis wanted her to have some time in the sun. From this, many more sun filled days followed for all of you. You're both in my thoughts and prayers.

What a beautiful bird she was. So clean and white! But best of all, she knew she was loved. That's the best gift you gave her.
