Good-bye little Morgan

Some of you may know the story of my little rattie Morgan, who was a snake food rat until I grabbed her and her sister almost three years ago. They weren't tame and didn't like to be handled, but enjoyed their lives very much in their big cage with lots of toys and treats. Earlier this year, Morgan had a tumor so she and her sister moved into my room while she recovered from surgery, and Morgan became a very tame girl who loved to be petted and would follow me around my room and sit on my foot whenever I stood still. Her sister Melissa has remained pretty wary but is always watching Morgan and me with curiosity. I noticed a week ago that Morgan had a new tumor growing and have faced a hard decision since then, since mulitiple surgeries are very hard on a little body and she also was older, and has respiratory problems due to her first tumor. So it was a mixed blessing to come home last night and find that she had passed away in her little area she liked under the dresser. I am very glad that she won't have to have any more pain or surgeries, and now she is happy and healthy and running around in rattie Heaven, but we will miss her very much.

MaryJane,

So sorry that it was time for little Morgan to move on, but am glad she made it a little easier on you by taking the decision out of your hands.

I'm so sorry to hear about Morgan! She sounds like she had a wonderful life with you and lived a long time. I don't think rats live very long.

When I worked for a Vet, a client brought their rat in to be PTS. It had a tumor on its side. The rat was still young, so my boss removed the tumor and took him to the pet store down the street, where he was able to find a good home (no, he did not end up as snake food!). I was so impressed with this rat and its wonderful personality! Have had a soft spot for them ever since.

I know Morgan is gamboling with others of his kind who have passed over the Rainbow Bridge!

COMFORTING THOUGHTS AND HUGS to you and yours, Mary Jane!

Maryjane,

I'm so sorry to hear little Morgan passed away. I know it still had to be hard on you after three years.

Thank you for giving her a wonderful home and for sharing her story with us.

Sending comforting thoughts and a hug.

Maryjane, I'm very sorry little Morgan has passed away. She looked to be such a sweet girl. I wish ratties were not so prone to get tumors.

I am so sorry that little Morgan has gone, she must have been a beautiful rat inside and out. She certainly looks very cute in her photo.

You saved her from a terrible fate and, as far as I can gather from research on rat life expectancy, you gave her a wonderful life that was longer than average.

Hi Maryjane,

I'm sorry to hear about your little Morgan You've really had a tough year last year with losses and this year isn't starting off very good either I hope that this will be it for awhile because it's so hard to lose pets and you've lost so many recently. It's got to be wearing on you...

Take care,

Thanks everyone.... Your kind words and thoughts help a lot. I know Brad, there have been a few in a row lost lately it seems! I am rather used to that since most of the animals I rescue have a shorter-than-usual life expectancy, or are old, or have chronic illnesses. But being used to losing them doesn't always make it much easier! There are always the ones, too, that you don't know anything about, their age and past and such, so it is a surprise when their time comes. But I just try to enjoy each of them while they are here and give them the best lives they can. I look back over the last six years (that's when I got heavily into rescuing) and how enriched my life has been with my critters, even through the sad times of losses. I am very lucky to have been led this way in my life and I wish everyone could find as much joy in animals as I (and the rest of us here!) do.

I had a snake-food-rat when in High School. The owner of the snake told me that "Buford" survived the night and so deserved to be set free. She lived with me most of the rest of her life. You could take her outside, put her on the ground, back off several steps and wait and she'd sniff the air and then come running to your feet and up your leg if possible. She lived a lot of her life in my pocket and loved it. Amazing little pet, really. I hated it when she finally got old and passed away.

I'm so sorry you lost you little girl Morgan She lead a happy life and I'm sure she appreciated all you did for her in the three years you shared together. She's spreading her joy to all our lost loved ones who reside over the Rainbow Bridge.

I'm sorry MJ.
But look on the bright side. Mortimer now has a playmate in heaven.
