Goodbye Mortimer.....

Some of you may remember when Mommy Meece, my pet rat, passed away a little while ago. Her dear old husband Mortimer finally joined her yesterday, passing away in his sleep. Mortimer was one of a litter that was born at my house after I rescued a pregnant rat from the snake tank at the pet store. I kept him since he was such a special little guy. He lived for over four years, a long life for a little rattie! I know he is happy now with his best friend Mommy Meece, able to run around and do what he likes without arthritis pain or old bones holding him back. I will miss you, Mortimer! Thank you for being my rattie.

MaryJane,

So sorry for Mortimer's passing.

It's comforting to think that he and Mommy Meese were apart for such a short time and are now together again.

Mortimer sounds like a lovely character, how wonderful that you were able to give him an extended life with so much happiness and comfort after his close brush with a terrible end.

Maryjane,

I'm so sorry to hear about Mortimer's passing.

He is now at peace and total comfort with Mommy Meece, the love of his life. What a sad yet appropriate ending. May they rest in peace and love...together..united forever.

Aw Maryjane, I sure am sorry about Mortimer. I remember you posting about Mommy Meece and Mortimer - they're probably romping around in rat heaven right now. I didn't realize they only lived a few years. I know you'lll miss the little guy. Big hug to you.

While I am sad to hear of Mortimer's passing, I know he lived a long and wonderful life with you!

My heartfelt condolences! Rats make lovely pets and certainly have their own personalites!

I remember when you told us about Mommy Meese and I know both are having a wonderful time beyond the Rainbow Bridge!

Good-bye Mortimer,

I hear you were a great little rat. I'm glad you had the opportunity to escape death before you were even born and able to bring so much joy to your human mom. Mommy Meese has been waiting for you.

Condolences

MaryJane,

Condolences on the passing of Mortimer, and also for Mommy Meece who passed away earlier.

I looked at your photos. Very nice! So many rescues! (Gotta feed our pigeon Wieteke at the window now).

Larry

Maryjane, I'm sorry to hear of Mortimer's passing. I too am a great lover of rats having kept 7 of them over the years. They really do make such sweet pets with their intelligent personalities. It is such a shame they don't have longer lifespans. Sadly they are particularly prone to tumours and respiratory illness and I have shed many tears after losing a few who have succumbed to such diseases. Four years plus is an exceptional age for a rat, as most will only live half this term. Mortimer was very lucky to have had such a happy life with you and his dear Mommy Meece.

Some of my rats were also rescued/adopted. I particularly remember old Harry who was rescued from a university laboratory. He had been used as 'food' for biting insects then kept in a small cage in the biological sciences department as a 'pet'. When I was doing my degree there, I came across Harry and offered to adopt him. He was middle aged when I took him in, but he had a happy retirement here with me for over a year before he suddenly passed away. My last two rats were sisters came from a litter of beautiful rats. I am sure they had a bit of siamese in them as they were pale coated with dusky brown noses and tails. Poppy died suddenly one day but her sister Pippit survived for quite some time after. I'm sure she was around 4 years of age too. I'm pretty certain I will get more rats in the future when I have a bit more room to keep them.

Thanks for sharing your story, Lindi. Rats certainly are great little critters. Like pigeons, they have a really bad rep and many people don't understand that they are smart and clean little animals, and very loyal. It is hard that they have short lives and can have so many health problems. Harry was sure a lucky rat for you to rescue him. I won't even get into what I think about labs and animals for experiments. Poppy and Pippit sound like they were sweeties too.
