Goodbye VelcroVelcro was my white racing homer and a very special pigeon (aren't they all?), but she came to me as a picked on, bloody squab. I hand fed her, got her thru her first molt, and raised her up to a beautiful white lady. She was very tame, and would ride around on my arm or shoulder like she was stuck to me. Thats how she got the name of "Velcro". She was my best pigeon for my living history presentation on messenger pigeons in wartime. The children and the general public just loved her. But in Feb of this year (2007) my husband and I were returning from an event in Chicago. The weather was way below zero all weekend. My husband was in a hurry when we got home to make sure his car would start. It had been sitting in the cold for 3 days without someone to start it up. It's a 1968 Impala convertible....his 'baby'. So the first thing he does is jump in and crank it up, not realising that I was parked behind his 'baby' (or beastie) and that I was bringing in the pigeons. So as he cranks up the Impala, all the exhaust from the dual exhaust system is drifting towards the van. All the pigeons seemed ok as I was bringing them inside. But about an hour later Velcro started shaking and gasping. I did everything I could for her (as a former vet tech for an avian vet I had a good idea what to do), but she passed away. My husband didn't kill her on purpose, but my sweet Velcro pigeon is still gone. I miss her very much.

That is very sad! I am so sorry.
It is something that could happen to any of us and shows how careful we must be with pigeons and fumes. Cynthia

The passing of VelcroI am sorry to hear of the passing of Velcro, and wish to offer my condolences to you.
I always thought she had not just an interesting name, but a lovely sounding name. There are so many pigeons mentioned on this site, that often I have to quickly scan posts, don't even get to read them all because I focus on some more than others, often skip a thread altogether, but I am always delighted to hear of the names people have given their pigeons (and other pets ad animals, for that matter). Don't get to comment on all the posts or on all the names. Don't need to, I guess. But I like to comment when a member has lost a favorite or a pigeon or pet which unusually interacts with us or involves us. I always dislike seeing feral city pigeons in the vicinity of the diesel exhausts of the public transit buses and the trucks around here. I feel the enveloping wave of shimmering heat. I can no longer smell, but I imagine that it must have a deleterious. lifespan-shortening effect on the pigeons forced to scavenge for food at the all-too-common conjunction of bus stop, streetcar stop, bakery and fast food retailers, where people are likely to drop crumbs and scraps while waiting for transportation to arrive. Many of the buses are long, hinged in the middle where they pivot when going around corners, like a bicycle with a bike trailer attached, and require several steps on the accelerator and multiple clouds of fumes to negotiate a corner. The buses slow down at corners for pedestrians crossing on the "zebra-stripe" safety zones, and after one has crossed by foot, comes the cloud of fumes catching up with you as the bus accelerates. I suppose hydrogen-powered vehicles with water vapor exhaust and heat output will diminish some of this danger in the future. Perhaps this is too long a post, or too much a divergence, for the memorial section, and some of this properly belongs in the general discussions forum. If someone so indicates by PM or attached post or email that they would like me to revise and divide and separate this post into two or more posts, I will be more than happy to oblige, and eliminate this (original) post. Perhaps some or most feel it all ties together and belongs together. I do not wish to distract from or diminish the original intent and effect of the memorial section. Just, some thoughts that are brought up by how Velcro was affected, and other pigeons are affected or might be affected by this ever looming, almost unseen, and usually unanticipated danger. Respectfully, Larry
