In Loving Memory Of...My dear Henny, a giant runt pigeon and a very special bird, died unexpectedly at 11:15am on May 18th at my vet's office. She was approximately 6 years old from what I knew as she wasn't banded. I purchased Henny in late 2001 from a breeder here in Ontario, Canada. She was chosen ahead of about 2 dozen other hens for her beautiful markings, her gorgeous firey orange eyes and her feistiness. She was to be the mate of my other deceased pigeon, Foghorn.
Henny was a timid and shy/skittish pigeon from the start, she wasn't used to such personal attention and care and never changed much during the nearly 5 years I had her. She grew accustomed to me and her life here but never really become a "pet" in the sense of the word. She was limited in flight, being a runt but this bird's spirit was meant to roam the sky, independantly free! She had a good life here, and was catered to, spoiled and fawned over by myself. She would make the oddest & funniest moaning/grunting sounds whenever I got too close to her. Kind of reminescent of the gouls on the old Scooby Doo cartoons....Ooooh...Oooooooh! She was a very strong pigeon, physically. She had so much power in her wings that I could barely contain her when she wanted to escape...even the vets had a time controlling her. She was a very determined mom pigeon, and so very maternal....I have no doubt that if a cat would have attacked her on her nest, she would have died defending it, whether it was a pile of twigs, eggs or real babies. She was an unusually large female runt as well, she outweighed her mate, Eggbert by about 50-75 grams. What I'll be forever grateful for is that Henny blessed me with two beautiful youngsters, Ricky and Lucy and after so many years of unsuccessful eggs and babies. In all the years I had her, my biggest dream (and hers too) was that her and Eggbert would produce a set of vibrant, healthy youngsters. There were so many dud eggs, babies that died in the nest and a lot of heartache all around. Almost exactly 2 years ago now, 2 fertile eggs were incubated by herself & Eggbert to near term, then were transported to another member's house (Maryco) so that the chicks could be hand raised. Henny never got to feel like she was a successful mother or realized it, but she was. Her two youngsters live on and will carry her incredible genes and her spirit will live on through them. Henny is the white pigeon on the left, her mate (the black pigeon on the right) is still with me. ![]() |

Brad, you must be heartbroken! I know how very much Henny meant to you and how much effort you put in to keeping her in optimum health.
She is one of the pigeons that I feel I have known and loved for a long time and my heart sank when I saw your post. Henny was very lucky to have such wonderful, loving care all her life. I am so glad that you have Ricky and Lucy. Cynthia

Brad, your post was a wonderful tribute to a beautiful lady. I know I've only been on the forum about a year now but Henny is one of the first birds I remember reading about and the subsequent poll to name Ricky and Lucy. I know I always look forward to hearing about them.
So, to the beautiful Henny - rest in peace, Angel. You will not be forgotten.

That was a beautiful tribute you wrote for your friend Henny. Thank you for sharing the picture of her and her mate. She was indeed a lovely bird. She left you a legacy in Lucy and Ricky. May they comfort you, when you feel the loss of Henny. Feather |

I, too, again add my condolences, Brad.
Henny was such a beautiful bird! While you have to bear the brunt of her loss, myself and all the members who "knew" Henny through your threads/posts will always remember her fondly. Warm healing thoughts to you and Eggbert, as well as Rick and Lucy! Goodby, lovely bird...gone but never forgotten! |

It's always so sad to lose a pet so dear. That bird was beautiful as all your pigeons are. At least you gave it a warm and loving home even if it ever thought of being free. Not all pigeons have it so lucky.
I hope when the time comes for Garye that I'll be able to say my last goodbyes to her and be able to find a special place where she can lie in peace. I don't look forward to that day but I know unfortunately it will happen. Even though she's just a feral, I love that bird and love seeing her. I miss her when I don't. I wish I could take her home as a pet but I know I can't. ![]() |

Oh, no, Brad. We're so sorry to hear of your loss. Henny was indeed a gorgeous bird, and her spirit and personality came through so clearly in what you wrote about her. I've no doubt you were a wonderful caretaker and friend to her, as you are to all your charges. Her memory will live on, even among those who had never met her nor you in person.
