May My Little Frill Rest in PeaceI went out to the coop today and found a poop and blood stain on the floor, and immediately tried to find where the trail led, but there was no trail. Then I looked in cubbies and found my little Frill fluffed up and sure enough she was sitting in a pool of blood, and in shock. She will normally grunt and fly away as soon as she sees my hand.
I carefully gathered her up and brought her to my intensive care station and set her up there. I could find nothing wrong with her on the outside except for the puddle of blood she had been standing in, inside the coop. I really didn't want to move her. There was fluid coming from her beak, her breathing changed from bad to worse and she lowered her head and passed. All I can think of is she crashed into one of my other birds or something else, but she did make it back to her cubby. I am the one in shock now, and am only comforted by the fact that she is no longer in pain and suffering. I took little Frill and gave her a home with another little bird named "Boy" who became her mate. She had one little feather on her chest that was actually a frill type feather, that is how she got her name. She was never friendly with me, and I allowed her that and respected her for that, as I didn't know her history. I never wanted to stress her until I had to intervene as she was laying soft shell eggs. I treated her for that, and she was laying good solid eggs ever since. Rest in Peace my Little Frill, may you soar with the Eagles and all our beloved feathered friends that have left this world. I will see if I can find her picture in my webshots file and post it. |

Treesa, what a shock this must have been to you, I am so sorry for your loss.
Frill sounds as though she found the right home where she could have her needs respected and still find the loving care that she deserved. A fitting resting place for her at her mates side, I know she and Boy will have fond memories of the times they spent together in Florida. fp |

Teressa,
That's so very sad. No matter how many we rescue, rehab and comfort while they pass on, nothing can prepare us for the "next time". It's always just as painful and emotionally raw. I'm sorry.

Oh Treesa, I am so sorry about Frill. I know your heart went into overdrive when you found her. She must have hit something really hard to have caused her to bleed like that. I'm glad she was in your loving arms when she passed.
Big hug to you.

Thank you all for your comforting thoughts and words.
I noticed her mate Boy, was looking for her. Those two were always together everywhere. I took Boy out to her grave, and told him what happened to her, letting him say his last good bye. |

I am so sorry for the loss of your Little Frill. This is quite a shock for you. You take such excellent care of your birds that something like this would be totally unexpected. I'm glad you were able to comfort her as she passed. My condolences to both you and to Boy. I do believe that they understand much more than most people think.

Oh my God, Treesa, this is heartbreaking! I'm so very sorry about your little Frill.
I can only imagine the confusion & shock you felt when you discovered her in that condition. Thank God you were together when she passed. Your little Frill was blessed to have a life with you, Treesa. Please take comfort in that, & in knowing that she's absolutely fine now. I'm sending you a BIG hug, my friend. Take good care of yourself. Phyll |
