My beautiful feral

My beautiful feral, christened Opal because of her beautiful shining feathers, died today. I was so devastated- she was fine yesterday and today i found her at the bottom of the cage, covered in blood. I miss her so much- she is my only feral, and the first pigeon that i'd ever taken care of. I never thought that i'd love a bird so much, let alone a street pigeon, but now that she's gone I cant stop thinking of her.
My only consolation is that now she's in pigeon heaven, and that she didn't die a horrible death if I had not rescued her. She was lying on the roadside the day I found her- it was late and she was cold. So I took her home and called a vet...she recovered after a month or so.
I bought her a mate so that she wasn't lonely while I was at work, but she was very wary of him for a long time before they finally got together. She had a pair of eggs that I thought would hatch, but they were duds.
The next lot hatched, though, and they're now two beautiful guys.
Anyway, the family used to live in a huge aviary with my ever-expanding collection of pigeons (all very precious) until I got a virus which exterminated half the lot (and her mate). I was distraught.
I withdrew from my pets for a while, and buried the poor birds in my yard (theres a white gravestone marking the spot) and i go there every day just to remember the good times we had.
Now, about six months down the track, I am mourning for the loss of a beautiful, special bird once more.
But this time, I'm going to get her cremated in a special little coffin all for her self. Out of all the birds i've had, she was the most precious.
I'll never forget you, Opal.

I am so very sorry. Know that you gave her extra time she would not have had without you. And a mate and children, she got to fullfill her purpose in life because of you.

I'm very sorry about Opal. I know how you feel; I had a loss like that a few years ago, losing too many all at once, it was so awful. You might look into vaccinating the ones you have for the future, just so you can avoid such loss again. It's not too hard to do and since I started, I haven't lost any to illness (knock on wood) for over a year now (out of 30+). I hope things go smoother for you.
