Not a pigeon, but a sad goodbye anywayI'm posting this in memory of our sweet parakeet, Cirrus. In the photo (sorry the focus isn't better) he's the pale one in the center. We named him for his appearance, like cirrus clouds in the sky. He was the tamest of our three budgies, the one who would always step up on your hand and never bit, even when he was sick and I had to medicate him.
Cirrus became ill about 10 days ago, vomiting repeatedly. Two trips to our excellent avian vet, x-rays, lots of antibiotics and a fair amount of money later, we're all still mystified as to what was wrong. We brought Cirrus home this afternoon after an overnight stay at the vet hospital and he seemed to be holding his own, but suddenly declined this evening. Steve took him out of the hospital cage, held him and spoke to him softly until he passed. He was always our bird. We bought Cirrus and Charlie as babies seven years ago from a local feed and pet store, and I think he had a pretty happy life. Rest in peace, little one. I'm sorry you lost your sweet little Cirrus
It's hard figuring out when there's something wrong with budgies, I lost my PJ in a similar way, he was gone in a few days after getting ill. Take comfort in knowing now he's well now with no pain or illness and flitting about with all our lost souls free and happy. He'll be waiting to greet you when the time comes, until then his memory of good time sent together will keep his spirit alive in your heart.

I'm so sorry Cathy
I know you are devastated inside over the loss of Cirrus, he is/was a beautiful and very much loved budgie. Birds are such strong and silent fighters when they become ill. This just makes things that much more beguiling for us humans and when we do so much trying to care for them. This is so frustrating for us and because we hope and want to figure out how to prevent things like this from happening again ![]() I have no doubts and nor should you, that Cirrus had the best possible life and home at your place. He obviously received the most excellent care and couldn't have been catered to more than he was with you. Hugs, |

My sympathies to every one who has recently lost a much loved "little-un". It doesn't matter what kind of critter it is, if it's an important part of your life, it still surely hurts, clear to your heart

I'm so sorry of the loss of your beautiful Cirrus. He does indeed stand out with that light cloudy awesome look, and I'm sure Cirrus is flying around those kinds of clouds now, in total peace.
I'm sure this was very devistating for you, and am sending comforting thoughts and a prayer.

Cathy, so sorry to hear of the passing of your sweet Cirrus. I keep parakeets too and know how sad it is to lose them. I lost my Dillan who looked very much like Cirrus earlier this year. They have such individual personalities and I know you will miss him very much. I take comfort in knowing that all our dear departed birds and other animals go to that wonderful place 'Rainbow Bridge' where they can live again free from pain and illness.
Comforting hugs, Lindi ![]() |

Thank you all so much for your kind words. I know you all know how sad it is to lose a treasured pet bird. The poor little guy fought so hard to live. We spent a ridiculous amount of money trying to help him and subjected him to painful treatments, only to lose him anyway. If only I'd known it would be for naught I wouldn't have put him through any of it, but how can you know? And if we hadn't taken him to the vet I'd feel horribly guilty for not trying to save him. I don't blame my vet, either. He's excellent. Cirrus' illness was mysterious.
It's hardest on my son Alex (19), who is deaf. He's not into the birds as much as my other two kids, but he does love the parakeets. Every day when he comes home from school he goes upstairs to see them. He would always get Cirrus, the tamest, to step up on his finger. I know he'll really miss him. We all do. Cirrus was just one little bird out of many, but they each have a place in our hearts. |
