one little soul gone...

I just lost my first bird ever to a peregrine falcon... i feel so bad. i saw it take it and go in its nest. Now i know its waiting for me to let the birds go. Im not. It has a nest on the other side of the road in a tree. And i think it has babies now and is probably teaching them how to hunt. Im not letting my birds fly until they leave. Any idea when they will leave?

<FP>,

I'm so sorry you lost your bird. Are you sure it was a Peregrine? I am not an expert but I am thinking if it has a nest it never will leave. The Peregrines that come through here do not have nests. They kind of stay in Motels (so to speak). They are only here for less than a week and then they are on their way.

It is very sad to see a hawk grab one of your birds. I was lucky enough to get my bird back from the hawk the time it grabbed my bird from out of the sky. (Cooper Hawk)

The Peregrines would knock them out of the sky though. I had wounded birds all up and down the street.

his name was Alien because when we first got him he was moulting and he had no feathers on the back of his head which made him look like an alien =p

Hi Flying Pidgy

I am truly sorry your Alien was taken by a hawk. This seems to be a very sad day with your Alien and Kathleen & Nick's Lullaby passing away. Alien was a beautiful bird and I know you'll miss him a great deal.

Maybe one of the moderators can move your thread to the forum "Hall of Love" to commemorate Alien's passing.

Well the Peregrines just pass through here. I believe that they like to be around water. (Marsh Lands) But we almost lost them forever, and the people that rehabbed them bred them in captivity and then released them through out the U.S. Good Luck! I hope that you don't have a permanent resident. The Peregrine is a beauty but bad news for our pigeons.

Hi Flying_Pidgey,

I'm sorry to hear about Alien and am hoping that he somehow might of gotten
away if you saw no signs of feathers where you believe the bird of prey to be
'staying'. He was a very beautiful bird, seems a smart move not to let the others fly for now.

Think it might depend on the size of the bird of prey and the available food supply around them at a given point in time. I've read that the Bald Eagle won't attack pigeons but this from only one source.
