Our Little Squeaker ~ August 15, 2007Last Sunday evening, Bob & I rescued a squeaker with an injured wing. He was all alone under an overpass, huddled against the wall.
On Tuesday, we learned surgery would be needed to repair his broken humerus. A pin would be placed, but his chances of flying didn't look good. That didn't matter, we intended to keep him. I felt so bad about having to leave him at the hospital. On Wednesday, Bob & I were on pins & needles waiting for the call. As I answered the phone, Bob studied my face. When I heard, "Phyll, I'm sorry," I looked at Bob & shook my head, so he would know. He immediately started to cry; I did too. I was told that when the surgery was almost complete, the baby passed away from internal bleeding. Bob & I returned to the hospital to bring him home. He is buried in the backyard. Although we were with this baby for less than 48 hours, we are so very, very sad that we lost him. I made a conscious effort not to get attached to this little soul, but it didn't work; I fell in love with him. I look over at my Jesse, snuggled down near his stuffed creatures, & I thank God for every minute we have together. Phyll Last edited by phyll; 18th August 2007 at 05:43 PM. |

I am so sorry, Phyll. You can't avoid attachment to a squeaker however briefly you have had him, just making a second's eye contact forms an incredible bond. They are so soft eyed and dependent.

Oh, but Phyll, you did save him from so much. He could have survived for days under that overpass, just to suffer from pain, hunger, thirst and fear. He died under anesthesia, so , no discomfort, didn't even know what happened. I bet he got plenty of loving from you and Bob before he went to the vet's office.

Phyll, I'm very sorry. We do get attached to these little ones so easily and so fast that losing one hurts us a lot. God bless you for doing what you could to help him.

I am so sorry about the little squeaker, Phyll and Bob!
I know you did the best you could. Surgery is always a risk and on one so young, even more so. I know compassionate doctors don't like losing patients and I'm sure they did all they could! Perhaps he will send another squeaker in his place. With love and hugs Shi |

re short time squeakerA few minutes in a loving safe home is better than a lifetime in hell. Maybe for that brief cosmic moment you had him he was safe, loved, and in his own personal heaven on earth.
