Paloma has passed...

My baby bird Paloma died yesterday in a tragic accident.

We let him roam freely around the apartment, but when my boyfriend was stepping off a chair, Paloma ran right under his feet and his neck was broken in the crush.

He died in our hands a few seconds afterwards.

We only had him for a few weeks, but we know he was happy for his very short life, not living in a cage and with all the seed he could eat. He was loved by everyone who came into our home.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Please do recognize that is was an accident. I have to climb up on a stool to clean my top nest boxes and I've stepped on a few toes, when stepping off of the stool. So, it can happen so quickly. One minute they aren't there and then the next split second they are.
Little Paloma lived a good life while he was with you.

Then there was the confused chimp at the zoo. He was reading the Bible and Darwin's Origin of the Species. Couldn't figure out if he was his brother's keeper or his keeper's brother.

I'm so sorry about Paloma. What a terribly tragic thing to have happen and I'm sorry you and your boyfriend have to go through this pain. If I could change it for you...

What an awful accident, OMG, I am so sorry.
I also have to step on a stepping stool to clean up the top of the cages and I am dreading this could happen.
I am so sorry.

I am so sorry about Paloma and the circumstances around
his passing. It could have happened to so many of us here,
I wish there were a way to make it 'unhappen'....I know
you do as well.

My condolances are also extended to you. It was a tragedy loosing Paloma, but a lesson to many of us. I am removing the stool from my pigeon coop first thing in the morning.

So, so sorry to hear about Paloma's passing.

Same thing has very nearly happened to us several times. Only conclusion I have ever been able to come to is that birds and humans will never mix totally. Maybe someday there will be a chip one can implant that warns us when a bird is to close to our feet or to some other dangerous object such an oven or a toilet. A programmable mapping and tracking device.

Also hope that someday cars and transportation in general will be handled by computer systems, with humans only as backup. Will eliminate traffic jams, especially during natural disasters. And no more drunk drivers.

I am just so sorry to hear about this all-around-unfair accident. Please try not to feel guilty (or your boyfriend). As you said, Paloma had the most wonderful life, free of cages, plenty of room to roam, spending time with his loving family. He was probably in shock and not in any pain during his last moments, and he got to spend them with you. We have all had accidents before with our animals, and feel so bad after but there's it's nothing that can be undone and it seems so unfair!! I hope you both feel better and that another pigeon graces your lives for you to love soon.

What a terrible accident! I'm sorry for your loss.
As Victor stated, this is a lesson to us. It's also a reminder.

To prevent daylight from disturbing Jesse, I stand on the sofa every night (morning, really) to tape the edges of a shade closed.
Once, when I stepped down, Jesse was right next to my foot! Shortly before, he was not in the area.

I'm sure Paloma's accident will serve to teach, sparing other birds & pets.

Phyll
