Rest in peace, dear RockyThis morning Rocky, who was Bern and Buddy's baby, passed away unexpectedly. He and the other babies, as well as his mom and dad, have been spending their days out in the wire aviary for the past week and enjoying it very much. I noticed Rocky favoring one foot a few days ago and brought him back in so he wouldn't injure it further. I couldn't find anything wrong with the foot other than a sensitive toe. He has been eating and behaving otherwise normally and spending his time in his big cage with Toto. This morning I woke up and he was nearly gone, and when he died there was a small pool of blood from his beak on the towel as well as some around his vent; liquid and not dried or anything. I have no idea what happened. He was obviously bleeding internally but has been acting normal. He just went downhill overnight, I had no idea he was even sick. What can cause them to bleed internally?? All of the other birds seem very healthy and well, I haven't lost any in months and am so glad. I think the garlic helps in the their water to keep them healthy. But it is very sad to lose such a sweetheart like little Rocky. Toto just looks like he's looking around for Rocky everywhere. I feel really bad. If only I'd known he was sick I could have taken him to a vet, or used some of the many meds I've stocked up.
We will miss him very much, his funny personality and the way he cocked his head when I talked to him. He was such a special little guy.

Sorry to hear about Rocky MJ........
It is very hard when they just "go" with no warning. I've had it happen twice and it sure makes it a bit harder.

I am so sorry Maryjayne, losing them is always dreadful. I can't imagine what could have caused the bleeding at both ends.

I am so sorry to read the terrible news.
I wonder what happened. If he had internal bleeding he wouldn't have acted normal. I had a bird once that was bleeding internally and he was just sitting doing nothing. Also the fresh blood indicates an acute bleeding, unlikely it was going on for days. He might have had a congenital abnormality in his arterial system, maybe some aneurism that ruptured. There is not much you could have done. Poor baby Rocky, RIP. Reti |

MJ,
I'm so sorry to hear about Rocky. Gosh, I don't have any idea of what it could be from the symptoms you describe. I think Reti's guess is about what I might guess as well. Poor little baby. Sometimes it feels so helpless when we have done all we can to protect them from all harm and something goes wrong anyway. May he RIP. Hugs and love, Margaret |

Oh, MJ - I am sorry for the loss of dear Rocky. You take such good care of your birds that it would be a shock to loose one so suddenly. This much have hit you very hard. My condolences to you and your flock.
