Socks is deadHi, I am new here and the first thing I need to share is a sad story.
I have pigeons for 6 years now and so far, everything went well. Hermina and Gustavo, my most successful breeding couple, had squabs again some weeks ago. Then, out of a sudden, without any reason I could find, Hermina did not care for her little ones again. One I could give to another couple, they accepted it, but one remained without any pigeon to care for him. So I decided to try to help. So far, I have raised kestrels, a swallow and all sorts of birds. But never a pigeon. So I put him in a sock with a heating source (that's why we called him Socks) and I started to feed him the best I could. This is why I first came here in search for a recipe - which I found. Unfortunately, I had no source for enzymes around, so I called my vet and he ordered some. All went well for four days. Then Socks died in my hands. The enzymes still have not arrived. When he died, it rained and when he finally had closed his eyes (it were the longest minutes of my life), there was a rainbow in the sky. My daughter said that this was a sign that he is well now. We're all really down now, we all loved him. Normally, Hermina and Gustavo are the best parents you could imagine. They are having eggs again and behave as normal as ever they were. I guess things will get all right again. But Socks - we miss him. |

Hi Sidlawpigeon,
Welcome to the group, and I'm so sorry to hear about Socks. It sounds like you did all you could for him. The fact that a rainbow came out right as he passed away sounds like.....a miracle of sorts, to me at least. What a blessing for you to see at such a hard time. I too think that it means he's in a happy place now, where he is healthy and able to fly. There is something called The Rainbow Bridge that many of us believe in, and that is the place where our animals wait for us until it is our time to go, and then they greet us at the Bridge. I think it is a comforting idea. And you even have proof of Socks making it to the Rainbow Bridge! Please stick around and share more stories with us; I for one would love to hear about the kestrel. ![]()

Hello and Welcome to Pigeon Talk.
I'm so sorry to hear about Socks, I know it must have been quite heart wrenching, and I'm sure you will miss him alot. I'm sure he is in spirit now and at peace. You might want to have Hermina and Gustavo checked out (physical and fecal) by an avian vet, just to make sure they are fine and dandy, before you allow them to have another round. We appreciate your sharing what happened and hope it doesn't happen again. Thank you |

I am so sorry that Socks didn't make it, there could have been more wrong with him than the lack of parental feeding. It has been an unusually sad week as far as babies are concerned. They all stimulated so much love in their short lives, I hope that they are flocking together now.
If it happens again have a look at this link, Helen has raised a lot of babies sucessfully from day one without additional enzymes, I think that they are probably a component of Kaytee: http://www.internationaldovesociety....eedinghelp.htm Cynthia

Hi,
thanks for all the comfort and help. You're really great. Gustavo and Hermina have been checked by our vet and found okay, so they could keep their eggs. I guess I will never find out why they neglected the little one. Thanks also for the links and helpful info. Good to know you are around!

Hi there, I thank you all so much. My vet failed to get the enzymes so far, in fact he has never been confronted with such a case. Can you tell me what enzymes they are, just in case I need them some day? You know, I want to be prepared now.
Hermina and Gustavo are having eggs now and they are breeding as carefully as ever before. I will keep you informed. I hope everything will go all right this time. Vet said it could have been the extremely hot weather that caused the chaos. He said that during this period of heat, many chicken died, too and some even died in their eggs. Strange, huh?
