The Draw of Love
Today, I was sitting in our little house by the patio door when a pigeon flew onto the screen from the outside and stared at me- orange eyes glinting. Mr. Hooters baby and I were sitting at the table, in here discussing what to do since Hooters is gone; and this young one, (who resembles him very little at all) and his or her sibling are now being raised by Fanny- Hooters widow. I had brought the little guy in last night to just be close to him/ her for a night-you know just watch him, and well you know -hope I could see some of Hooters in him or her. I had kept him all day. That pigeon on the screen had startled me so much, the only pigeon who had ever done that before was Fanny when she, as a wild coop pigeon had struck up a window romance with my Mr. Hooters a few years ago. He would have nothing to do with her for the longest time, (as I was his one and only mate, well –there was of course his attraction to the pepper grinder, his snow owl toy, and a few other irresistible household items). But I know he thought sought me out the most. She carried on such an ardent love affair to him through the windows and patio door for months, I began to feel sorry for her and one day opened the door. She walked in like visiting royalty; walked right past me, with the barest of glance, and flew up to his sleeping place at the top of the bookcase. He of course came undone, panic flew to my head and Hooted madly, I think I was pretty correct in hearing him say, “Do something, do something, there is a strange girl on my bed!” Why he was so very upset and either scared or extremely shy of her as he was carrying on and complaining about her walking all about the house.
I laughed at him, “Don’t you worry!” I remember telling him, “I’ll just put one of your extra diapers on her and she will want to be out of here- licky split!” Why I just walk over to her picked her up with little to no fuss, and ummm… tired to fit Hooters extra on her but she was one very large lady; so after some adjustments, I diapered her. She never blinked an eye, never fidgeted, or fussed. That is how much she was smitten with Hooters. So I eventually lost him to her. She was just not going to take no for an answer. Some birds want to be house birds, others are just coop birds plain and simple; and that was Fanny. So to allow them to be together, Hooters moved out to the coop; I had in-house visitation rights, of course and he came in often, making the rounds in the house and sometimes sleeping over by my pillow, like old times. He always wanted to go back to her after a time.
So this bird on the screen brought all this back to me like an old movie. I got up and follow her with my eyes back to the coop. Went out there and was shocked to see it was Fanny! (My family has been helping me with the coops, for a few days, while I have been in here crying and carrying on so; maybe they had not latched the door, maybe it was me -I have really got to get it together) She has not been free since she settled down with Hooters, I never would risk the hawks here to let either of them fly. She is out looking for Mr. Hooters. She had always watched him come in with me, so she knows where he goes. Guess I am rather stunned. All I have been thinking is how sad I am, but here is Fanny pushing her way out of the coop ( the only one to come out at all, with the door unlatched) to peer into our windows and hang from the screen looking for Hooters. It is about dark here now; I am waiting to see where she will light for the night so I can catch her. But she has been back several times, I even opened the door for her like before long ago-but she flies back away, looking at me with her bright orange eyes- I swear she is crying…
Thank you for all your kind words..I'll be sure and share them..
