Traveler Has Begun His Final Journey

What a sad day this is for me. This morning I found my beloved Traveler on the floor of the enclosure he shared with his little family. He was cold, limp, and barely breathing. I know that he will pass on in the next few hours. Though I have brought him in and made him a nice towel nest on a heating pad, I know there is no chance that he can return from this final journey that has now begun. Losing Traveler will leave a very large hole in my heart.

For those who don't know my Traveler, he is a 21 year old racing pigeon that came into my life many years ago. He was found at the Green Thumb Nursery with massive wounds to his head. Over the course of several months, he recovered from his injuries but lost the sight in one of his eyes. I was able to contact the secretary of the club where Traveler was registered, but they no longer had the records for Travelers hatch year (1987). Thus, Traveler became a member of my feathered family.

Traveler was a solitary bird for many years. Though he had the opportunity to choose a mate, he remained celibate until FanFan became a widow. Traveler courted her, won her, and produced two babies with her. Travelers offspring are Pepper and Parfait.

Fly free, my beloved old bird! You are a grand old pigeon and will be sorely missed.

Terry

Thank you, Charis. Traveler has now finished his final journey. He passed just a few minutes ago.

Terry,
Now Traveler starts a new journey, free from those burdens caused by old age and infirmity. Traveler flies stronglyand surely, to a place where he will wait patiently for you and those others he loves to arrive. Traveler knew he was much loved and was so safe and happy with you. It must have been difficult for him to accept that it was time to go.
Hugs,
Daryl

How very sad, Terry. Traveler was such a special pigeon, I don't think any of us will ever forget him.

I'm sitting here crying........I'm so sorry. It's hard to loose any of them but just like when your 90 year old grandmother or grandfather dies........they lived a good long life but you know that it has to end and that doesn't make it any easier. He had to be one of THE luckiest pigeons God ever put on this earth. He lived long, and pass quick without much suffering. Fly, Fly, Fly little buddy.

Then there was the confused chimp at the zoo. He was reading the Bible and Darwin's Origin of the Species. Couldn't figure out if he was his brother's keeper or his keeper's brother.

I was reading another thread and a mention was made of "Terry losing an older pigeon." My heart dropped and I KNEW WHO THAT BIRD WAS!

Still have the tears! I am so sorry, Terry! Even though he lived a long and wonderful life in your care, seeing him pass, I know, was so heartbreaking for you!

We all know that he will be joining many other beloved feathered ones to fly free as a whole young bird. For those of us who still live in this world, he will be missed.

I'm sure, Terry, that you will feel ghostly wings gently flying by - that will be your beloved Traveler letting you know he's OK and not to grieve...he will always be with you and you with him.

With LOVE, HUGS and COMFORTING THOUGHTS...

Shi

Terry, my heart is so full right now because I am not only shocked but deeply saddened to read about Traveler. I know only this week you mentioned him in a thread about how old our pigeons were. He was special to all of us.

I think there is some comfort that he went so quickly and did not linger in pain or suffering. I think it is so wonderful he had this period of time with Fan-Fan and fathered his babies so late in his life. He will live on now in Pepper and Parfait.

We will miss hearing about him but I can only imagine the pain you feel in losing this beautiful pigeon. He was a true Matriarch and may God be with him in his journey.

Oh Terry I am so sorry that Traveler is gone. I know he had a long and FULL life here on Earth and now is flying free forever, but there is no way to console the ones he leaves behind. He was a very special individual and really left his mark behind. He will be remembered by many.
