'Winter' killed by passing Car...

Last night, around dusk, 'Winter' went outside flying...

He was used to flying outside most days, whenever he felt like it, grazeing and being ambient with the Wild / Feral others, sometimes making high wide circles with them or on his own, then comeing down to land on my outstretched arm if I called him...

I did not know he had gone out, but the Weather is nice, Big Door was open, as was the front transom aperature, and everyone who wants presently, everyone in 'free rove' in here, can go out or in, as they like...and most do, so...

Later, having played with him and others in here a little bit around dusk, checking on everyone, feed and water matters, how-de-do things, having fed the new arrive Youngster "Jet" his formula meal on my Coffee break, then having been busy in the shop with work things for a few hours, around 2:00 A.M., I walk out side, in front, for no reason, and somehow my eyes immediately went to a little dim lump maybe 60 feet down the street, and somehow, I knew it was him.

I jog over, hopeing it is not him, but it was him.

Looked like he had been hit pretty hard...and I guesss had been there since around 7:00 or so when last I saw him and he was flirting with a youn injured Dove and she was not likeing it and was fluttering in her cage so I scooped him up laughingly and put him in the front room and walked back out into the shop to work on things.

So I expect it was about as instant as instant could be...even if was five hours later that I found him.

...at least he was not run over...

Born early February, his Nest got removed by some people when he was about five days old, where he then went three days in an unheated garage in a box with some confetti in it...brought to me hypothermic, waxen, starved, dehydrated, laying on his side, trying to rally and stand...sibling had perished already...I warmed him with my breath for half an hour in my cupped hands...then, into the Peeper-Warm-House...some tepid electrolytes...and...

Soon was a happy little peeper, active and bright and vivid...loved to eat...ate lots...it was cold, cold in here, and I knew he had been through a lot, so, every night from the beginning, for many weeks, I had him sleep in my palm, as I slept...sometimes I'd get a little cramped...he took right to it though.

He still flew down to do that now and then even last week...otherwise, it was the highest night roosts in here for him, which he fought fiercely to get, keep and defend from other older and much larger males in free-rove pending their release...

Very handsome fellow, wide Ceres, short Beak...

If I asked him if he would like a drink of Water, he'd fly through the rooms over to the kitchen sink, fly to my shoulder as I arrived there, and wait for me to hold up a cup of Water for him to drink out of. How he learned this I do not know, since he always had his Water Bowl or the common Water Bowls...seems like at some point he just knew what that meant if I asked him...

If he wanted a Bath instead, he'd either try and lead me to the sink, or he'd take a small sip of Water I was offering then have this 'look' which somehow meant "I would like a Bath! Not 'just' a drink!" - so, I would fill a large pan for him and he'd jump right on in while I was filling it. Usually I'd drizzle Water on him and he'd lift one wing over center top for the water to get on it's underside, then, do the other...then I'd just let him splash around a while.

If he was in his high night roost, and I was about to turn off the light to go to sleep, sometimes I'd say, "Winter, you wanna fly down here and sleep on the bed? like you did when you were little? Or you wanna stay up in the high roost there?" And, he would pace back and forth decideing, and, about half the time he'd fly on down and settle in, ending up laying next to my ribs. Or, sometimes, he would just be there already when I finally hit the hay...and he'd mosey onto my palm, or just roost on my hip bone or knee and sleep there standing on one leg.

Here's his portrait taken last week when I did a fast image gallery of all the faces in here...

Anyway, just wanted you to know...

In case anyone was going to be asking after him since we have been talking about him lately somewhat.

Phil,
I'm so sorry about Winter. I'm sure he had a very happy life with you. It's so hard to lose a friend.

Phil,

It has been a short while since you lost your Winter, but I am sure the pain is still present in your heart. You will have some good memories of your baby bird. The memory which will live for a very long time with you as well as many of us. Sorry for your loss.

Hi Phil,

I'm so very sorry about Winter, I know you must miss your little buddy resting in your hand or other favorite spots when nodding off. He will be well remembered by all of us at Pigeon Talk.

Thank you...

It felt too 'hot' for me to visit the thread Terry provided...so I had to wait a while...

Now I discover his picture has disappeared!

And I am trying to see if I can fix that.

Thanks for letting me know, Victor...

Best wishes...
