Since Rusty is taken
I think that's perfect. Love it!!

SEVIN POWDER works well for lice or mites.

(Sevin comes in powder or spray)

Please make sure that you cover the bird's head when treating. Keep it out

of his eyes, and beak/nostril areas.

Sevin power can be found at most good hardware stores.

Welcome Hutchison I've been lurking too - but finally just had to say "hi" and welcome! So glad you've got a new housemate - s/he sure is a beauty! I think Latte is the best name so far - definitly matches the color.

LOL - you say a couple birds now but just wait... they are highly addictive and my crystal ball sees more in your future

Sorry to hear about the lice/mites Sevin powder like Victor suggested seems to be the best. And I don't believe you need to worry about your house - more than likely the type of lice/mites Latte has are "feather mites" and really aren't interested in anything but feathers.

Well see there Maggie - you just described "family" and what a wonderful family this site is (I wouldn't have things any other way)

Sevin seems harsh isn't it? How do you get it on the bird? Do you dust under the wings too? Being that he's still not recovered, I would be concerned about using something too strong.

I picked up some lice n mite spray before I saw the messages on Sevin. Would it be bad to cross treat the bird with both? maybe after a couple days?

I currently have him in a large wire dog kennel my finished basement near a french door that gets full sun, although only half is sitting where the sun will come in on him.

I'm thinking about building a cage to keep him inside.. How much room does a bird need? how about 2 birds? LOL!

Just do the spray or the Sevin .. not both.

I am truly being buried in AGSG birds coming in on my e-mail right now. If there's another in your area, I will let you know...

Sounds like your current arrangements are fine BUT .. the bird needs natural sunlight (not through a window) for at least 15-30 minutes per day .. the natural light helps them convert the food they are eating into real nutrition for them. There are ways around this, like adding supplements to their diet, but real sunshine works really well

More later! Bless you for saving this bird!

Terry

Oh, I like Latte. Wish I'd thought of that one. Nice ring to it. And a beautiful bird. And it can go either way. Male or Female. LOL.

Latte is perfect!....did you find a feed store or livestock store in your area? you may find a feed just for pigeons at a feed store, not a pet store...

There aren't many feed stores left near me (most have closed down) Tractor Supply had Dove food which is the closest i've found so far. I will talk to the manager to see if he could either supply or order food for me.

He seems to have slowed down eating, I did have the food in there full time, but he didn't eat that much. I'm not sure what could cause that. Is there anything I should look for? I will put him outside when I get home so he can soak up some sun.

Latte it is then!

Latte was probably used to being fed at a determined time each day before he was put out in the world to fend for himself. When you first contained him, he was pretty hungry from not finding food on his own, so he probably ate all he could hold, but now he most likely realizes the food is coming on a regular basis again and he need not gorge himself. Unless he really seems to stop eating at all, I wouldn't worry.

He's slowly doing better. I think he hit his left side on the glass, the left side of his face, eye, and breast muscle are badly bruised, you can see the discoloration starting and his skin was slightly torn on the breast, but skinned over and looks ok. His beak is also slightly askew but doesn't look like it's interferring with anything. I am SO surprised he didn't die after seeing some of the damage. He has to be awful sore though.

I'll be picking up his new buddy Saturday. That is if Boohberry can catch him!! Will keep them seperate for a while to make sure this other bird is ok too.

I think Latte is out of the woods! Lastnight, I let her fly about the basement and she went back into the cage on her own. She was also softly cooing with JP this morning which was the first time I heard anything from her. (still assuming it's a she) Her feathers still look a little shambled and dull. I think the mites are gone. So hopefully after she molts, she'll look much better.

Is there something I could add to her food, that would help her along? supplements, minerals, vitamines?
