Hope it all works out and I can hardly wait to see the out-come of "your going in...." by the way you have me rolling on the floor laughing. You have a great imagination and sense of humour. LOL Lindylou

LOL lindylou, Thanks!

OK I did it! I ditched the spatula and armour that suit doesn't move so well in the winter. How embarrassing that was...
Anyway, I'm not sure it was worth helping them out now though. lol I saw a pigeon walking over by the door which is where I have this little shelf. It looked like they were both cuddling in there for shelter because that storm has been picking up since early morning so I'm thinking if they are in there then there must not be eggs.

Is it possible they were just hiding back there this whole time(the spot where I think the eggs are) and one kept watch? Or more likely that they just abandoned the nest?

Since I didn't know for sure I decided to go through with my plan anyway. I had everything ready to go out there, so I went up to the window and they were sort of cornered so they flew off. I tried to see down in the nest area but I can't and I didn't want to move any of the things I had there for fear of squishing eggs. Again I decided better to put something up just in case.
I had a few cardboard boxes so I broke one open and put one across the bottom area to block any wind then I put a throw rug over top and then covered it with a broken box so the snow would just slide off. I moved that little shelf over there and lined it with a smaller box and then another smaller box low enough to step into and it has tissue paper, shredded paper and shredded thin packaging card board and then cut up shammy pieces. Of course the finishing touch, a "home sweet home" sign. That's it.

I could have made it better if I could have moved stuff but I did what I could. There is already snow blowing in the little spot I left open.
Will they even come back now that I altered there little area?

I hope this isn't my fault for not getting out there yesterday, if they left the nest because it was to cold. If there even is/was a nest.
I guess it's a wait and see if they come back for shelter but obviously if they both left then there are no eggs? I was under the impression that if there are eggs there still then they will keep coming back to warm them, is that wrong or does it depend on the temperature? I guess even still they have a little shelter if they come back. I wish I could warm it for them. Oh oh! I seem to have adopted to pigeons, now I am worried about them now.

lol Are these all stupid questions? Meh, you gotta learn some how, right?

LOL, i'm sure they will be back, although with the regulars that visit my garden i've noticed if theres snow about they may not show for a time.
I still see them sitting on rooftops and chiney pots, but very rarely do they actually land in the garden in the snow till its actually starting to melt, even if there is food out for them.
I would pluck up the courage again to have a look behind things and see if there is a nest. Its possible they were just using the place as a shelter, but just as likely they were making it "home sweet home" LOL
If they were, and they see it is still safe they will be back.
They may even leave you a note saying what they want for breakfast

Good job, Smirky! Sounds like you made a super effort! I'm betting they'll be back. Can you shine a flashlight into the 'nest area' and see if there are babies? One parent will always be on the eggs till they hatch and at about 1-1/2 wks they will leave the babies alone for increasing amt's of time. Do they have a little water and bird seed? Winter can be hard for wild birds whether they have babies or not. Again, good job! Pigeons seem to gravitate to people who will help them and these guys were lucky to find YOU!

Ugh. Well I appreciate all the advice from everyone. Thank you Quazar and doveone52.

I think no matter what I did to help them out, unless I had a really good heated area for them, the eggs/babies would have died. The last time I spooked the parents who were huddled trying to get warm, was the last time I have seen them and it's -30 so where ever pigeons or any birds for that matter go to keep warm then that is where they are. Where exactly is that? You know, I need to forward mail and all that.

My pathetic attempt at a shelter didn't work out well either, lol It's full of snow. It's all in place still the snow just found it's way in. Bird seed would be covered and water would be frozen within an hour or less of putting it out so I didn't bother.

I hope they come back when the weather gets better. At least now, thanks to you guys I will have an idea of what to do. Maybe I can make a place for them before they get a chance to get in there. Would I be able to lay plastic down if I have it secured well enough that it doesn't make noise or flap up or would they be scared of that?

They are going to be devastated about all the renovations to their home being wiped out by the storm. Oh knowww those new granite counter tops and the walk in closet! She was so excited about that closet...

lol Thanks doveone52!

I will try to come around, I don't know anything about birds except for how to panic about them and their "babies". lol Oh, and of course how to build immaculate homes, but I don't like to brag.

Maybe this is a good time to read around some more on the forum and actually learn a little about them.

Take care doveone52

Hello!

They're backkk! We have had a stretch of warm weather and I think they were dying to check out their new digs.

I woke up this morning to "cool, cool, cool" well they may have been saying coo. I have only seen the smaller one though so hopefully the other made it through the cold spell we had. You guys were right, they seem to have adopted me. Do I get a cheque for that? lol
They seem to be fine with my cat too. If they can survive the extremes of winter then they can survive the wraths of Teeger.

I need to get out there this week and fix it up a bit since I got a look at where the snow was blowing in, which has all melted in that area now. I'm kind of embarrassed by my nonstandard workmanship.
I am a little more confident about it this time thanks too all here.

I hope everyone is well.

Lol, I think a lot of the pidges have been hibernating here recently.
My small visiting flock has been few and far between recently although starting to drift back now.
Watch teegar though, dont let him get too close, not just for attacking or chasing them, but a cats saliva can be lethal to pigeons.

now, time for you to get re-decorating their appartment lol

Oh geez Quazar lol I don't think I could handle a flock! I suppose yours will come back too. Reminds me of that song/cartoon "The cat came back"

That's interesting. I had never heard of that before, about the saliva. My cat's would be extra lethal he has some bad breath. He will only go on the deck if I am out there so the pigeons wouldn't be around. Even still he's more of a mouse kinda guy. I have held him at the window to see the pigeons and it was a 3 second look and back to nap time.

I definitely need to re-decorate. Styles change so quickly! They wanted a big water fountain and now she is telling me how 2 weeks ago that is. A steam room now...

I'll see what I can do Hawk Hunter! Last time I tried I got the old wing slap to the face because the Mrs. hasn't lost her winter weight yet. Between you and me she says that every season.

lol Ok I'm a bit of a goof ball. I hope to see the other one soon. Is the male the larger one? Or is one of them just with a younger male/female. That's all the rage these days.

TTYS

First, I started this reply on a new thread and decided to find this one and add it here so it may be repetitive in regards to this thread. I don't think that made much sense but I'm going to go with it.

I was here a while ago rambling on about the two pigeons who decided to make my deck home.

With the gracious help of a few members here I did my best to do a makeshift little home, think junkyard meets cardboard. I basically waited until they left when it was cold one day and used things already on the deck and then I did my best to block the wind with cardboard. Other pigeons coo in evy.
After a few -50 w/c temps they came back and have been happily leaving their mark...all over the place.

Before when I was on the forum someone suggested putting some sort of bedding out there. I did, I put it right in front of my patio window and they didn't touch it. Now I just looked out and she is laying in the bedding and didn't even flinch so I think I am having a baby!! Err I mean she is!

I won't ask about when the babies hatch and all that because I am sure it's been asked a million times on here, so I shall look around.

I just wanted to say I may actually have real babies! Real ones!! lol
