Actually, I don't know as I've never given a baby to a bird that I knew couldn't feed it. That's why I said check just to make sure. I expect that everything will be fine, but you can't just assume so. There is just one baby, right? That will make things easier for her. She probably DOES have crop milk by now, but it's probably not fully developed, BUT, between her and the Dad, they should be able to manage.

Seems to be going wellIf both foster parents are sitting on and feeding the chick, then all appears to be working fine.
You should be able to tell if the chick is getting fed by looking at the crop. It should appear full. Especially when birds raise one youngster, it will be very well fed and will make for one chubby chick. You can also feel it to see if it is both full and what is in it. If you feel lumpy seeds in a very young chick, it will have trouble digesting them but I suspect that it is doing fine from what I've read. The pigeon milk is thick and gooey with no hard seeds in it and you should be able to feel this and even see it as their young crops are fairly transparent. When parents feed a young chick and they are feeding pigeon milk, the motion that their body and head go through is very subtle and gentle. This will usually be done from a very low or sitting position. When they begin feeding seed, their whole body gets into it and it appears as a much more violent procedure. This will usually be done from a standing position. You will often notice a bit of the pigeon milk on the sides of the baby's beak as well, just another indicator that it is being fed. They are not very good about using napkins for clean up. Bill |

Hi again, a quick update.
Have been checking them throughout the day although I haven't managed to get a good look at the chick (foster mum had laid her eggs in a small cardboard box, with a 4 inch high hay nest) and foster dad is going frantic when I go near, They are still feeding it and between them haven,t left it...even having a quick squabble at change-over. It's moving and breathing and when it was feeding it was giving little squeeks...so I am presuming all is well I left the heater on through the day today ( I usually only use it at night) as it has been quite cold...fingers crossed....I hope it is going to be ok!! seeing Flora (foster mum) and Pink daddy (foster dad) take to it unconditionally this morning is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen xx Jayne |
