Aint getting along for the winterJust a few weaks ago we mixed my 2 homers in with my mated pair of helmets and it didnt go over well. My male helmett (luke) isnt getting along with my 2 female homers
. I think hes just trying to stick up for his girl lol but..... the reason we put them in together is becuase it is almost winter and snow is going to be falling in a few days so we pu them in together that they might keep each other warm but my 2 homers are scared to even go into the side with my nesting boxes are and also were it is darker and warmer beucase there isnt a window in that side. What can I do because i dont want my 2 homers even my helmets to freeze ![]() we have been thinking on puting my homers back into their own old cage with a heating pad or somthing in there and in luke and daisys cage too. The second thing to do is my 2 homers are girls so we could get them 2 fine looking racing homers |

The helmets will be the most aggressive. The space must be large enough for two or three nest boxes and some perches.
Hang a light bulb in the loft, up close to the nesting boxs jor above them. Just one 60 watt bulb will take care of an area that is 4ft. x 4 ft. The extra light from the bulb will also take away their night time tension. Regards, Carl |

Lights in Loft??Big Bird, Is it ok to have a light on in the loft for 24 hours? Does it help heat enough to keep the birds warm even in Chicago? Is there another alternative? I would think the lights on would keep the birds active thru the night

The birds should make the winter. You might consider the water though. That will freeze fast. So they have some drinking water. other then that. shelter from the wind. The wild birds survive there. Ferals. And they have no heat.. But they can find water. Caged birds need at least to have water in the mornings and evenings. But A light wont really be a must.

If your birds are acclimated (introduced slowly) to freezing temperatures, they will adjust. Keep them out of the wind.
I prefere a light on in my loft, just in case some deadly animal enters at night. I have seen evidence of coons in my loft from the night before, but all of my birds were accounted for. Carl |
