Belgian Trap Design

I am in the process of converting my shed to a loft. I want build a Belgian style trap and I was wondering if anyone knows the correct left to right spacing for the dowels that will be at 45 degrees to the aviary.

About 4 inches seems to work for me.

I use 3.5. The birds do have to squeeze. Especially the bigger cocks. But it stymies the hawks. If you go with four consider a few horizontal dowels to make the vertical entrance a bit smaller. We use 4". Pigeons don't seem to mind but drives the pigeon eaters nuts.
