circo virus in USA?Hi just wondered if pigeon circo virus had reached the USA?
as I had real problems with it here in UK last year But thankfully the birds seem to have got over it now. Birdguy |

Yes, circovirus is here in North America, but I don't think it is common or perhaps just not recognized for what it is. Here's a link to one article: http://www.vpu.co.za/articles/alan_w...rcovirus_1.htm

I have a feeling it is a lot more common than we think it is. Mostly because you can't diagnose the bird by just looking at it. Circo is like AIDS, in that it damages the immune system. The young birds will show a variety of different disease symptoms, and a lot of them end up dying. Your birds just seem to never be NOT sick, even after the correct medication for each disease they have. Salmonella, canker, and respiratory infections are the most common ones to strike Circo pigeons first.
In Australia, one vet could see over 50 lofts a year with Circo virus present. So I wouldn't doubt it if we had the same problem here, or possibly worse, you never know. Unless you take your sick birds to the vet to get tested. |
