Considering Becoming a Pigeon RescueI have found a number of pigeons over the last few months and thankfully, after a little rest and an anti biotic they have flewn away safely.
I found a baby one yesterday and have been trying to find someone who could help with hand feeding etc. I called 10 vets, 20 plus animal rescues, the RSPCA and the RSPB and not one of them would help. I think I am 'destined' to rescue them due to the volume tI find (or go looking for!!) Any one have any ideas where I might be able to get a cheap coop/loft or would a shed do with some compartments etc in. Obviously when they are sick etc I would keep them indoors until ready. Thanks |

You can find cheap cages and hutches on places like Craig's list. Sheds can be adpated to work as a loft with a little effort....see the loft section of this site. The resources section is also very helpful. If you let us know where you live there might be one or PT members in your area to assist. Thanks for lending a "wing" to those in need.
And welcome aboard. |

Where are you located? I MAY be able to find you some back-up.
I love it that YOU are interested in being a rehabber/rescuer. It can be pretty lonely when you are the only one in you area.

Hi All
Thanks for the replies. I live in the North East, County Durham. I sickens me that no one is interested in trying to help these little birds! I have just been sitting in the bathroom with a baby pigeon I found yesterday and it's heartbreaking that I can't help her and she just can't fly. She is calling out for her mum and it's awful! I will have a look at the places suggested and see what I can pick up. With regards people locally, the fact that no one seems interested doesn't install much confidence. But on the other hand, after speaking to a load of vets today they all said that they get loads of calls about pigeons so it concerns me where they all end up! Many thanks |

Hi Kanchenski, too bad that you are in England, I'm in the Bay area in San Francisco, Thank you for doing a hard work, is not an easy job and all here appreciate when people take their time and help, even if I'm in the states feel free to email or ask anything you want, are many experts here in this great site as you will see and we love people like you that help without any condition. Hopefully we find someone here that is near your area.

You definitely can help a baby pigeon- they respond well to rescue. Put her in a basket or a bowl with a nice towel or cloth to make it snuggly. Put her next to a mirror (pigeons LOVE mirrors). Put some seeds in the "nest" with her where she's actually sitting on them and hand feed her. Keep her warm with a heat lamp or heating pad and give her attention and snuggle with her. Baby pij love to sit cupped in your hand or on your shoulder snuggled against your neck. Good luck with her. |

Hi Kanchenski,
Please don't give up. It's the fact you can't find help that makes it all the more important you carry on trying to do what you can. It's the way I started. I volunteer at a place that the RSPB recommend people to who have found injured birds. It is pitiful there, they don't treat any injuries only put these birds in cages and if they make it then fine, if not..... I carry on going solely so I can keep an eye out for the ones that come in sick or injured that I can help, and I tuck them under my arm and bring them home !! I don't have the facilites but have arranged an empty potting shed into my 'Hospital' recovery. Any new ones are kept indoors, usually in my airing cupboard to keep them warm until they are able to go outside and join the others after treatment. I managed to find one vet that will see any bird that I feel needs professional help, but I have to pay and he isn't local to me. I get so much help and advice from this site and that makes a lot of difference and they have seen me through many emergencies when I know the vet would probably not help. It is great you are even wanting to help, you'll probably find if you were able to build up a relationship with a local vet, it could turn into a two way thing, they could contact you if they have a pigeon that needs rehab, and in turn may help you out with treatments. It's worth a try. Good luck, Janet |
