Question

early signs of eggbinding?

what are the early signs of eggbinding? i have a young female that is less than a year old.....and i noticed she wasnt walking much, she just stood next to other pigeons and when i got close she flew away, but it was easy to grab her cuz she was moving slower than usual.......she also had kinda of a "humpback" where she was bending at the tail....
weird thing is that when she pooped, it came out looking like the clear part of an egg yoke and not only that but i left the bath pan for them to use, and when i came back to put it away, i found an egg in it...it wasn' t a normal egg dou, it was like clear, really soft with sort of tissue around it...kinda looked like when cows give birth, and the calf has a tissue around it, something like that...i checked her again, and and she still had the same humpback position......

p.s. this was the second egg she was laying, the first one came out a little bit bigger than usual and had some blood on it, i checked her vent and it looked normal..nothing out of the ordinary....

Sometimes the first eggs are hard on them.
Do you provide a source of calcium for your birds?

It sounds like they specipically need more calcium such as oyster shell.
I always keep it available for my birds in a separate bowl.

Since it is her first egg/eggs there can be a few issues, but walking slower then usual is not normal unless she was just about to lay the egg and was moved.

Having the hunched back look is a symptom, but if they are about to lay it is normal.

What kind of supplements are you giving your birds?

You might add some extra calcium to the diet, as well as cod liver oil, and some brewers yeast. In addition if she did have a shell around that one egg give her drop or two of olive oil to get any remainder of shell out of her.

My hen, Sonica laid her first egg with a tiny bit of blood on it, the second was egg yolk running out of her. I gave her the olive oil as instructed by my rehabber friend, and she was fine. She has been laying eggs for years now with no problem, but all my birds get supplemental aid.

If she shows any signs of beeing weak or not walking well, seperate her from the mate and let her recooperate and gain her calcium reserves. Allowing hens to bathe frequently is always a big plus.
