egg in or out?

Can anyone tell me if a pigeon can re-absorb an egg? I have 2 'couples' of pigeons and I stupidly forgot to check for eggs for a couple of weeks as they live at my parents house and they are too scared to put their hands under them. Anyway 1 couple had 2 eggs that were'nt far off hatching and the other pair had 1 egg that was quite new. I took the new egg off 1 pair and replaced it with an egg from the other pair so i was thinking in theory they would have a better chance of surviving if each pair had 1 chick. The foster parents chick hatched a couple of days later but she never laid her 2nd egg. Will it be stuck inside or does the body absorb it again?
She seems fine but im scared in case theirs something i should have done.
