egg shells for calciumI met a canary breeder near here who suggested microwaving chicken egg shells for 4 minutes to make them brittle and to kill any bacteria, then crushing them and spreading them on the floor for picking fun and extra calcium. One more way to recycle!

I've been using eggshells ever since we got our first bird.our local feed stores don't sell grit and a guy gave us a bag of red grit,which i read that it didn't contain calcium.So instead of searching every for the other grit I just mix egg shells with the red grit.I wash them out as i use the eggs and when I get enough I heat them on a low temp in the oven, then crush them into small pieces.
