First Bath

I put a cat litter pan half full of water in the aviary today and the new hen went crazy. She stayed in the water for about 15 min. just ducking her head and shaking her wings over and over. She seemed to enjoy it far more than I thought she would. My wife and I also enjoyed watching her. I saw on another site where one of the members (I think it was Lovebirds) put something in the bath water (I think again, but not sure it was 20Mule Team Boraxo) to keep mites and other nasties off the bird. Anyone know for sure what it might be or any info on what to put, if anything, in their bath water?

George

I crush a clove of garlic in the water and leave overnight before giving to the birds. The bath water's a bit smelly but, it gets rid of all feather lice!

I put about 2 tablespoons in not quite two gallons of water. I don't measure exactly. But 1 tablespoon per gallon is what I use (when I measure )
I use kitty litter pans too and use the big "almost" two gallon empty laundry detergent bottles for the water. I always put a little very hot water in the jug and shake it good before filling it up.

I sure wish I could get my birds to bathe . When I first got them they bathed a time or two . Now nothing .... I tried 2 different water dishes , last one being a nice plastic cat litter pan and they still avoid it . 2 inches of water in it but they dont seem to be interested. I change the water every day and have tried different locations for it . Nada .

Anybody else have that problem ? Maybe when it gets blistering hot out here in the desert they'll try out the bath water .

My pigeons just love a bath, outside, even when it's 40 degrees out.
I use a big black large animal feeding bowl-dish. (horses-cows) I also put it in the sun.
I even tried luke warm water, they like cold water, every time!
It's filled half full, and all 6 birds cram into it, at once! It's really funny, and they just love it!
Some times, I even refill it for them.
Bath time is only on sunny days.

I know it ND . Its sure a mystery to me , pigeons usually take to water like a duck . I've only had them about 2 months now , so I guess I'll just wait and see , I dont know what the deal is with them . Silly birds .

Maybe It's not deep enough, the big dish/bowl that I have is 21" round, and 6" deep. (black plastic, with a rim)
They get 3to 4" of cold water, from the outside water tap.
I set it on the sidewalk, or up on a wooden spool (power co, cable spool) That sits in front of the small loft.
They don't dive in right away, only after 20 min. or so of flying or fooling around.
Try offering them a bath, say every saturday, at 2:00 pm, on a regular basis, they should become acustomed to it, and expect it, then take advantage of it.
Theres nothing wrong with the water, or placement of the dish. They would enjoy a lot of room when bathing. (more space the better)

Hi ND , thats an idea I havn't tried yet

I measured my kitty litter pan and its 15'' x 18'' x 4'' deep . I read somewhere to put 2 " of water in it . Maybe its not enough water .... I'll fill it up to the brim and see if they like that better . Temps are in the high 60's to low 70's here so that shouldnt be a facter .

I'm going outside to try it right now and see what happens

Take care ,

Hambone

When my birds are finished, they always remain in or go to the sunshine,to dry off.
Maybe if it's too shady, they won't bathe.

Another thing, they sit on the rim for a while pecking at the water, first.
if there is'nt a stable rim on the dish/bowl/tray for them to stand on, they might not bathe.
They don't just jump right in.

I wish that I could have a big fountain!
They might get used to being sprayed (Gently) from your garden hose also.
