For those who use Garlic caps

Hi folks,
I've never given my birds garlic caps before but I would like to add them to my flock's health maintenance regimen, so...a question for those who swear by the power of garlic...

I bought some "Natural Garlic Oil" softgels from CVS today. Just want to verify that I've purchased the correct thing. According to the label, each gel capsule contains 2mg garlic (Allium sativum) (from 500:1 extract) (equivalent to 1,000 mg of fresh Garlic Bulb) Other ingredients are soybean oil, gelatin, glycerin.

If these are indeed the correct capsules, how many do I give each bird, and how often?

Thanks in advance!!!

Ok - just did some more searching and found Treesa's sticky on garlic. Looks like the gel caps I have purchased are a similar concentration and ingredients to what she recommends.

Is Olive oil a good substance for lubricating the pills when administering? Or do I need to find Cod Liver or Neem oil? (not even sure what neem oil is)

Hi Karen,

You can use olive oil, but just a drop no more. The benefit of the Neem oil is that it is also an immune builder so they get double the goodness. Olive oil is okay but you have to make sure to use no more then a drop. My Neem oil has olive oil in it.

For preventative only I was going to start the garlic clove in a gallon of water...but cannot find where it tells exactly how large a clove (one section or the whole clove?) and whether to crush it or just drop it in..stupid I know but might as well get it right the first time through someone else's wisdom and experience!

Thanks George and Treesa!
I caught 11 out of 12 birds and fed them garlic caps today. Dipped the end of each pill in Olive Oil to help lubricate- less than a drop. Will catch the last wiley one after dark.

kippermom, I'm not sure if the garlic cloves need to be crushed or not when soaking in water. I usually don't crush them but that may not be right. Hopefully someone will be along to straighten us out

This is what he says: The link above is for the whole article

"Another method of giving garlic to the birds is to chop or crush a clove and add it to the water. 1 clove to 2.5 litres of water twice a week. Those who have done this report that their birds have not required deworming. "

I usually crush one clove and put it in a half gallon of water, otherwise they won't drink it.

"As seen on Youtube".....this fellow pokes a bunch of holes in 4 segments of garlic, lets them soak in a gallon of water about a day and offers it to his birds once a week.
